Just wasted an hour of my life watching this.

Total tosh. The sad thing is there will have been people watching who now think they can get a complete restoration for an E Type for 6K! Either I'm getting old or telly really is getting worse.
No problem is that great that it can't be run away from.

Couldn't agree more. That would make a good episode on Rogue Trader.
I don't think I would want to win a car from those guys let alone buy one.

I am always greatful to have anything about classic cars on tv

Mike Brewer is bad enough but this.... It appears to be a series 2 2 + 2 californian import bought for 12K which isn't a bad price

A team of 4 mechanics taking 4 weeks is going to cost ??? in labour so figures are poss right. If they knew anything about E types they would have put a webasto in the roof instead of that awful glass sunroof. Am watching it on 5 + 1 Will try an watch till the end but...

Bare metal re-spray without removing engine and trim
Parts off scrap yard in Sarf London????
Trim removed after re-spray

These clowns are what gives motor traders a a bad name. Yep Rogue Traders isn't a bad description

As moronic programmes go, on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the worst , this rated a level of about 37. By 8 minutes past 8 my finger was itching for the off button, but ludicrously I stayed watching until at just after 8.30 , when the contrived backing into an engine of the newly painted shell took place, and I could take no more . The only sensible thing for Channel 5 to do is to bin the rest of the series

#7 Ha bloody ha ha Channel 5!

Tonight I've watched the brilliant Michael McIntyre on DVD and this. This had bigger laughs (and I love MM)! I know, you know, we all know, this was utter tripe. It's just a shame those who are on the verge of being tempted into the classic car market might actually believe this nonsense. Channel 4 (I think) did a programme like this years ago where you could win the car at the end, but without all the stupid personality bit (I mean what did those fat gits actually do anyway?). And to value a 2+2 LHD US car with Strombergs that hasn't had the engine out or even the bonnet off at ?30k!!! I'd like to have seen what that experienced dealer (anyone know him?) who valued it would have said if they had then offered it to him for ?25k. I'm sure he would have run a mile. I expect the figure was written by the producer.

I pity the poor sod who wins it, he, or she, will now have to restore it properly this time.

Ouch, that hurt my eyes! I kept wondering when they were going to take the bonnet off .............

At least we now know the term "re-sale red" exists and is not just an urban myth. Only trouble is we are going to be snowed under with people wanting to know where they can buy an E-Type for ?12k and restore it for ?8,000 within 28 days  I need to go and lie down.

Now I can't sleep - so I have tracked down the valuer, Dylan Miles, who works for RM auctions and sent him an e-mail, which I hope wasn't too strong;

Dear Mr Miles

So far the condemnation of the Channel 5 programme ?Classic Car Rescue? has been absolute and forthright within the E-Type community on the E-Type forum, as you can see here;

http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=25704#25704

Now that you have seen the programme are you really going to stand by the valuation you are supposed to have given of ?30k for a US spec LHD auto Stromberg equipped 2+2 that is supposed to have the same amount spent on it as a good re-spray OR a re-trim (certainly not both)? I have just spent ?15k on an under-bonnet restoration ? no re-spray, no re-trim, and no engine re-build (the last owner spent ?25k on that), so I do know the reality of the situation. I also worry that you didn?t get overalls on and get under it, or even drive it. In you nice clothes you could not have properly checked the frames, and that is ?2-3k alone if they are gone (ask me how I know!).

Reputation is a lot in this game, and this disgraceful programme would not appear to have enhanced anyone's, so I would be pleased to know if there is more to it that meets the eye. I do hope you won?t bother with more of the series. If you are, I feel that you should ensure that it is made clear that any figure you give is what might or might not be achieved at auction (RM auctions wasn?t mentioned) and that anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay (which, conveniently in this case, will not be put to the test as it is a prize). This programme gives the wrong impression that the novice can make money doing this. He cannot. I fear Real people will put real money into no hope cars and loose it, and you seem to have been a part of this deception.

I will post this mail onto the forum, but will only post your reply with your permission.

Regards

I wonder if I'll get a reply.

Well said!! I doubt if we get a reply.

According to his CV the "expert" should have known better

Anyone spot the irony This programme followed by Cowboy Builders which rightly outs bodgers! So were do you stand Channel 5? Or is it just entertainment and to hell with any moral high ground

Look on the bright side, at least the E type was featured first, now we don't have to watch the other 5 program's.

Although it was a really bad program (especially the reversing into the engine bit) at least the passion and love for the E type as a car, did shine through.

Only caught the last 15 mins of it. Tempted to watch the rest of it on the re-reun on Thursday just to see how awful it really was! Can't understand why my own S2 rebuild is taking so long when all you've got to do is get hold of some geezers with some hammers and spanners and Bob's your uncle....

After watching the programme I sent a complaint to Channel 5 which is copied below.
It made me angry just like property renovation programmes used to do when they showed a team of builders gutting a house and completely renovating it with new everything inside and out. Then the owner would guiltily admit that the project had gone over budget but they had still only spent ?10k on it......!

I just watched the Classic Car Rescue programme broadcast last night.
I won't comment about the comedy style of the programme but just about the totally misleading impression given about car restoration costs. It stated that the cost of the work was ?8400. That is impossible given just the little of what was actually shown in the programme.
As an example the cost of buying a complete interior trim kit for an E-Type is a minimum of ?2200. It then takes many man-days to fit.
It was clear that many other parts were replaced or else completely refurbished. I know from experience of being an E-Type owner that the costs are huge.
All I can imagine is that you completely ignored the labour costs. However these are nearly always the majority of the final bill. If only 2 guys worked on the car for 4 weeks that would be about 40 man days or 320 man hours. At a cheap labour rate of ?50 per hour that makes ?16,000 alone. If it was 4 guys working that would be ?32,000. As a result the total true costs mean that the car would make a big loss when it was sold.

I believe you are seriously mis-leading the public without giving more detailed breakdowns of all the costs.

Looking on the bright side, if I make my wife sit through it she might end up believing that restoring an E-type is not as expensive an exercise as she'd imagined....

Someone ought to complain to Ofcom http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/t ... programme/ on the basis it misleads the general public.

Mislead the public? TV? Surely not

On Wheeler Dealers the person they "buy" the classic off is one of the crew, as is the person they sell it to.

On Homes Under The hammer and other such programmes we are led to believe that new kitchens bathrooms central heating can all be done for ?5,000 - it can't and it is a danger to some people who are misguided enough to beleive it all.

I think we may be getting too excited about this I too went in search of a ?10,000 E Type 6 years ago but ended up nearly 3 times that. I researched the subject read the mags looked at the forums. I think the type of people who would consider an E Type are a little more mature and wordly wise than to take this programme at any other than a half hour TV slot aimed at the yoof market.

I agree, surely no one with an interest in classic car restoration would believe the cod maths anyway. What really gets my goat is the totally pathetic nature of this as a piece of TV. Surely, here was a great opportunity to do an hour programme on a really interesting subject and the fact that it would have ended up costing them ?25K to restore the car only to have it valued at ?20K would have been a far more informative and salutary conclusion- There have been a few examples of car restoration programmes iover the last few years - my personal favourite was the Mark Evans "An EType is Reborn" Here was an articulate, engaging chap, obviously with a real passion for doing up old cars, and apart from the slightly budget production, it was an interesting and informative programme which completely (and wisely in my opinion) side stepped the subject of financial value and costs

When I was shouting at the telly my wife asked me to change channels but I couldn't.

I was impressed by the old scrap they took out of a skip they thought could be used to rebuild the IRS.

At least the chaps at work had a good giggle talking about it at tea time.

All I need know is call asking if we can restore someones E-type for ?8,000

you've guessed what my next call would be about Harry, but as I'm a reasonable man all I'm looking for is a re-trim for ?1,500.00
but seriously tho' will call about the trim very soon.
