#1 How to polish you car...

Post by ChrisC » Thu Mar 07, 2013 2:51 pm

Found this thread whilst looking for pictures of how the padded dor top should look... Now thats a clean car - but this is what the "detailing" game is all about I guess... Very nice - but I guess it doesnt get driven.. but I notice there are no shots of the exhaust manifold so maybe it does...

No i don think it is - my car is opalescent Silver blue and it is noticeably lighter. This appears to be more of a mid-blue but I dont know what its called. Nice though.

Yes I thought that too; too ldark for Opalescent Silver Blue and to light for Opalescent Dark Blue (I think??). I saw a Series 2 OTS at Brooklands on New Years Day in this same colour - beautiful. Wish I new the colour!

Those detailing guys are very skilled but in the wrong hands the machines they use can do a lot of damage. I guess there is a limit to how many times you can have this done as they remove part of the clear coat to get results. Cost is about ?500 depending on how far you want to go.

He won't be driving that on the lanes round here, it would look like that for a matter of seconds! Beautiful job though.
No problem is that great that it can't be run away from.

A lot of detailers swear by White Diamond metal polish. Costs about ?16 a bottle and available from detailing supply specialists and eBay. I am planning to try some myself shortly.

in the post he appears to be using Blackfire wet diamond metal sealant which I *think* is more of a sealant than a polish. I have been using Alu-Magic which is a cleaner/sealer which I quite like but I would be interested to hear what other folk use.

On the J-L Forum, Dick Russ recently recommended White Diamond. I had tried various other polishes and cleaners and got my dash pots and intake manifold looking pretty good, but with what I would call a satin shine. I picked up a bottle of WD ($14.99 for 12 fl. oz. locally) and with very little effort gave them an almost chrome-like shine. My cam covers are still at the machinist's shop and I am anxious to get them back and have a go at them with the White Diamond.

Mark,

I replied to that post on J-L. I searched the internet and it appears that it might be great on aluminum but I would be careful using it on chrome and some of the Harley owners found it put deep scratches in the chrome, some others have also had mixed results when using it. They have it on Amazon UK I'm going to get some and see if it's any good. Solvol autosol seems to be good at bring up aluminium.

Just tried some White Diamond Polish on my SU bells and a cam cover and I have to say I am very impressed. Lot easier to apply than Solvol as it is very liquid and the shine is indeed almost chrome like. Recommended!

I just bought some White diamond from ebay, well I bought it about two weeks ago but the postage must be very slow in Somerset where it came from because I only got it today. I had a quick run over the car with this evening, I didn't want to spend too much time cleaning the engine as I had other jobs to do. 30 minutes and the engine bay aluminium, stainless steel and brass looks fantastic. It's the easiest cleaner I have ever used. It is a very light liquid and pours out of the cap very easily so you have to be careful. Just follow the instructions which is wipe on and work a bit until the liquid turns a grey colour, leave to dry for a minute and wipe off and polish. I tried it on one of my spinners and that came up very well. I'm still a bit wary of using on the major chrome items. Like David I'm very impressed. There is enough to do your car about 300 times I would think.

I joined the detailing website just to have a look around and they take it really seriously and do some great work. I have bought a clay detailing kit and an adjustable speed polisher just to see what I can achieve. One of our electricians recently emigrated to NZ, he had a VW R32 and took real care of it, money no object when it came to the best polishes from the top names, luckily he gave it all to me for nothing as he couldn't take it with him. So after going over the paintwork carefully with the polisher I have every resin polish and wax made to finish it off. The white diamond polish is also supposed to be good for cleaning dull headlights. I'll try and post some photos when I get time to do it.

I have used claybar for years and it is very effective. Just been in touch with Russell Briggs at Reflectology http://reflectology.co.uk/ and he is coming over to correct the paintwork on the Elan. Previous owner put some micro scratches and swirls in the paintwork whilst washing the car and I can't get rid of them with T-Cut. Whilst he is here I will get him to look at the E-Type and see what he says.

#20 How To Polish Your Car

Post by JimmyS » Tue Apr 23, 2013 7:30 pm

My cousin in Ontario has treated himself to an old RX-7 complete with oxidised red paint. His son suggested he read this before he sets about it...

This may be of interest, especially if your car still has its original paint.
