Stolen E-Type Recovered After 46 Years

Hi Just heard about this , the old guy may plan to restore it , but I would of thought it belongs to the insurance company (assuming it was insured ) and I would assume it was as it was only 6 months old when stolen , and ??? if the insurance company agree he can buy it back , what would they charge ? the price of the car in the 60s or the cars worth today ,
and I wonder who has lost out on the deal? the guy from Holland? or the American who was selling it ? I would imagine there was some big bucks exchange there ?? :(

The well reputed jaguar restorer in California bought the car incomplete and replaced all the missing parts and then sold it to the dealer in Holland. Half way across the pond US Customs put a hold on the container and had the whole container returned complete with the other three cars.

When it all came to light the dealer in the US refunded the dealer in Holland. Not only is he out of pocket for the cost of the car he has also lost all the parts he fitted as he was not allowed to remove them. He also had to cover the extra shipping costs for the return to Europe of the three remaining cars.

Apparently the cars did not show up as stolen and Customs missed it when it first left the US.

I don't think he is very happy at the moment.

How on earth did they get the paperwork through the shippers and customs given there would be no V5, or the US equivalent, to prove ownership?

It didn't show up on the Stolen register or with Customs. It must have been the back office that picked it up.

I know in the UK if you HPI a car you can pay extra which safe guards the buyer in any event like this.

It would be ?25 well spent.
