I asked Faye about the ownership requirement and she referred me to the blurb on the back and said for about ten years (?) if someone has all four numbers already then they have been giving a certificate - presumably on the basis they already have the core data and the only extras on the certificate are minor.
And there lies the problem as i pointed out to JH the other day , anyone can view these four numbers on a car and apply for a certificate unless they insist on a V5 copy in the applicants name , this request for a V5 copy is stated on the JDHT web page , although they may issue a certificate without one ! >

The extras on the certificate are not all minor Pete , it could have been with the case with the ebay Vin plate that the seller did not have some of the vital information before getting the Heritage cert which he now does .

I've got several of the things but none show the reg, so I forgot about that. The colour doesn't matter to the seller (or buyer really).

My beef is not that the stuff is stolen - I presume it's not - but that its 'anonymous' non-VIN-declared sale for that sort of money is clearly aimed at someone who does not want to pay 3-4 times the going rate for knackered parts but wants the perceived opportunity to ring a car and have it emerge with no awareness that it is not the car it purports to be.

As Peter says, this is the problem.

A ?5000 "identity package" could quite easily entice someone to steal a ?45,000 car give it a ?10,000 colour and trim make over and restamp the engine and frame numbers for a nice ?30,000 "profit", simply for a trip out with a low loader at unsociable hours and a few weeks work in a lock up under some railway arches.
The implications are far reaching for the poor unfortunate individual who is donating his pride and joy and the unsuspecting purchaser of the "restored" car.

If the e bay seller genuinely believed it to be memorabilia the staring price would be 99p. Check his other items for sale, is there a credit card cloning machine by any chance?

As regards the Jaguar heritage certificates, I think potential owners are looking at them as some kind of authenticity or proof of provenance document. There really does need to be a tightening up of the requirements. I personally would be happy to pay much more for certificate knowing they weren't handed so easily.

Has anyone actually managed to speak to the seller or get a contact number?

Simon

Well the listing has gone. Let's hope the seller had a visit from those who ensure the law is upheld. Hopefully he received some friendly advice. J

sadly, the problem lies with the fact that these cars are now worth so much, they will always attract the unwanted.
As regards the heritage certificates, these are way over-priced and worthless as such, given that they mean nothing other than what numbers the car once had.

Here in the States, we have this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaguar-E-Type-X ... 1888343751

The only thing a buyer would get is a bill of sale, the plate, the "Made in England" tag and possibly a fuel tank :( At least he's not trying to sell it as memorabilia and it doesn't have a Heritage Certificate.
