Carsten has a good point.
Find out as much information and as many of the numbers on the car, eg on the picture frame towards the front right wheel, gearbox, engine, etc.
Then post it on here with photos.
xkedata.com has many extant E Types listed.
Caveat emptor

First of all, is the car UK registered ? If so, what is the number ? And does it have any documents, V5C or older registration docs ? Colour inside and out ? Apparent year of manufacture ? Or if not registered, are there any overseas docs with it?
The more info you can provide, the more likely it is that someone will be able to help . Also, if you are a member of the JEC, Keith Vincent is very expert at dealing with these issues

For matching numbers, the current owner can apply for a Heritage Certificate, stating the correct numbers for VIN, engine, gear box, which will then be confirmed on the Certificate.
If I were selling my matching numbers car, I would have such a Certificate with the car.
Edit: my car also has no ID plate, it got lost in the 25 years in disassembled storage. It is matching numbers however, confirmed by a Heritage Certificate. So it is not an a priori scam. It could be though, so caveat emptor indeed.

Hi ______ ?,
assuming you have the car ID, you can check and see if it is listed here:
www.xkedata.com
Some of the cars have listed their respective gearbox or engine number, so you can interpolate - but only to a certain degree. For newbies it takes time to sort the different numbering schemes used, for chassis and engines.
Another help would be getting a Heritage Certificate from Jaguar Heritage Trust, in which the basic data is confirmed. Please use your real name, it's general practice here on the forum.

Firstly i have known this car for a lot of years. It has been sitting in a shed for at least 20 of those.Iit was bought it in 1983 and the guy drove it for a short while until a carby developed a leak. So i believe the car to be genuine.
The numbers are being sent to me. When i get more i can add this. Just trying to find out what to do, or who to see re numbers?

I think only the owner can apply for a Certificate, so you'll have to persuade him/her to get one.

Phil : if it was on the road in 1983 it should have a V5 and be on the DVLA database. The V5 should have the car ID on it . As far as I know, anyone can apply for a heritage Certificate, but it is vital to understand that the JHT will only confirm information you give them - it will not supply missing numbers - so you need the numbers before you apply for a certificate

Hi Phil,
Welcome to the forum. It's easiest to add your name & car details into your profile signature so that everyone knows who you are & what car derivative you're referring to.

Thanks for all the help guys. Just thought i would keep the thread up to date. I have purchased the car. It belonged to a cousin in Australia. As i mentioned earlier he bought the car in 1983. He says he only drove it for about 100 miles before it developed a problem with the carby.P B-B wrote:Thanks for all the replies.christopher storey wrote:First of all, is the car UK registered ? The chassis number is 861119 which confirms it is a 1963 MAR/APR build. Engine number is R9999-9 Don't know if that is a matching number as the ID plate is missing as i said. Gearbox number at this stage unknown. Cousin said he was told it was the original gearbox. We will see. Not too concerned at this stage. He bought it from a chap who raced the car in South Australia. History i will have a lot of pleasure in finding out. The car has 44,000 miles on the speedo. It has a fibreglass bonnet on it presently but comes with the original bonnet. Cousin keeps saying it was very fast when he bought it. Not that that matters.
My father who is an EX F1 mechanic had a good look over it and could not find any rust. Again we will see. It has been stored in an insulted shed all this time. Photos of the car show it to be in very good order. Think i have had a good bit of luck finding this car so close to home, if you know what i mean.

I think it was lightened to race and then returned to road use with a mix match of trim pieces. Nothing that cannot be returned to normal.

Your engine, Phil, is almost certainly the very last R series one , as the numbering then restarted at RA1000 . The car is thus dated to a build of about late January 1963
Incidentally, don't take this as a rebuke of any kind, as it isn't, but please don't quote all the past thread each time you post , as it makes the thread very difficult to load and read
