Flags
#1 Flags
Well I finally obeyed the prompt and went to add my flag. There is Wales but no England. Best I could find after a hunt was "Great Britain" for those here in what I would call the United Kingdom...at least for now.
Have to say that to me Great Britain is not the obvious name to look for as far as I am concerned. But there we are...just me probably but if you are looking for United Kingdom or UK you are out of luck as far as I can see!
North Korea is there though....wonder if any E types have got in?

#2 Re: Flags
Scotland and England had separate Monarchs until 1603, when Queen Elizabeth I died without any heirs. The next in line of succession to the English throne was James VI, King of Scots who became known as James I in England. James was also King of Ireland and of France at the same time. Scotland and England, together with Wales united by the Act of union passed by the Scottish Parliament and Westminster in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Irish Parliament voted to join the Union in 1801 when the then Kingdom of Great Britain became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The full name of the UK then changed in 1922 when most of the Southern counties in Ireland choose independence and ultimately became what is now the Republic of Ireland, leaving the UK as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Britain is the official name given to the kingdom of England and the principality of Wales. The name was made popular by the Romans when they came to the British islands. Sometimes people use the shortened name Britain instead of Great Britain, to mean the same thing, but really Britain only refers to England and Wales. The name Britain goes back to Roman times when they called England and Wales "Britannia" (or "Britannia Major", to distinguished from "Britannia Minor", ie Brittany in France). The Roman province of Britannia only covered the areas of modern England and Wales. The area of modern Scotland was never finally conquered.
So:
Made in (Great) Britain = final manufacture in England or Wales
Made in England = final manufacture solely in England
Made in UK = manufactured in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. This became the de facto standard for all goods produced in these isles regardless of which part of the Union they were made and continues to this day.
Trivia:
Jaguar attached a 'Made in England' plate to all E-Type's until the end of production in 1973.

David, that sounds like something you learned for your 'O' level history exams?
But as I do refer to you as the Headmaster, then it's something to be expected.

Well, as caretaker it's your job to raise and lower the school flag at the beginning and end of school each day so you'll know all about flags, standards, jack staffs, etc.

#7 Re: Flags
Regardless of the history I would like to fly an England flag and I suspect that there are many scots who would like to fly the Saltire.
I wonder if my membership of the Manx Motor Racing Club allows me to fly the flag of the Isle of man? Maybe I should go for Wales as
my youngest daughter is Welsh!!

I have moved Great Britain to the top of the country selection list so it will be the first thing you see when choosing a flag. For England and Scotland flags you could always use one as your Avatar or in your signature. No idea why those flags are missing from the list - that is the way the flag data appears in the Forum software. If you want me to add them you need to create scotland.png and england.png files of 32x32 pixels, 1.4Kb in size. Not quite sure how that works given the flags are oblong.cactusman wrote:Best I could find after a hunt was "Great Britain" for those here in what I would call the United Kingdom...at least for now.

I have added a couple of new smilies to keep the nationalists happy although I fear the People's Republic of South Yorkshire will then want their flag added

We seem to have lost our forum members from St Lucia and Zambia. Maybe they found running an E Type in those countries was a bit difficult?

They are still here - I reduced the number of flags displayed on the Home screen to 20 as they were cluttering things up. The most popular flags are shown first and those with one member in alphabetical order after that. The display of flags is not really necessary but I thought it would be useful to encourage members to add their country flag which is primarily displayed within posts to help you phrase your replies. No point telling the owner in St Lucia to pop over to Moss Jaguar or Longstone Tyres to help with a problem!

I was wondering whether they were finding potholes, difficulty in finding spares, lack of 5 star unleaded or arguments with elephants (Zambia, not St Lucia) as the reason we were losing them.

How come I've suddenly got a flag?
Hadn't added one at all in my profile (was still looking for a white flag
)
Is there something automatic going on now?
Is our caretaker up to something sinister
Geoff

Automatic - all users get a default flag which you can change in your UCP. It was based on IP address look up but I switched that off as it was not 100% reliable.
