I used gold engine/caliper paint from eBay. They are all the same, buy the cheapest:

I use Plastikote plastic model paint ! The cylinder head does not , in fact, get all that hot ( probably less than 150C even in the plug wells and does not really need high temperature paint

Many thanks guys for your replies - very much appreciated. It seems to be a bit of a minefield out there with few people if any who actually know what the definitive "gold" colour is!! It almost seems like .... if you like the shade then that will do !!! As I'm sure we have all discovered, gold is gold in many shades, just as black is black also in as many as 30 shades!

It may not be worth getting too concerned about the exact shade unless you're preparing a trailer queen for concours exhibitions, that is not starting the engine or at least not running it long enough to heat up the head. I think that every gold painted head that I've ever seen has faded somewhat within a relatively short time (6 mo.- 1 yr.) of having been painted. Eventually, they all look to my eye to be pretty much the same hue.

Thanks Mark. This car is certainly not going to be a trailer queen. This car was designed to run, and run I hope mine will. I have had this car since 1983 or thereabouts and this is the second rebuild. The first, 30 years ago, I did when I was living in the Far East and parts were really hard to get - not to mention that I lived in a 9th floor apartment and everything had to be carried up to the flat each night - no tools could be left downstairs so the rebuild was quite onerous! Lovely to have a garage here with all (well, most) mod cons on hand.

We do know what the original colour was - Bradite 'Old Gold' metallic. The company still exists and makes paint but unfortunately they no longer produce automotive Old Gold - I spoke to them and asked. Nothing special about it according to them, just a standard metallic paint. Interestingly they did do a non metallic Old Gold which I think is what the Americans refer to as 'pumpkin'. Not a name you would have heard of over here back in the day as they were not a native vegetable. They no longer have records so I was unable to follow the whole orange/pumpkin/gold thing to its conclusion.

Hi guys

Sorry to revive an old post but I am about to fit a new set of manifolds to my S1 4.2 and noticed that the valley of the cylinder head is painted gold but the sides aren't. Could someone tell me what parts of the engine were painted gold on the 4.2's and is there a paint that can be applied by brush rather than can as the engine is still in the car so want to avoid any sort of over spray.

I apply the gold plastikote by brush. A selection of small brushes ( 1'4 inch is best ) will do the job very well without making a mess

Which shade of gold do you use gold leaf or antique gold?

Trevor : I think I have used antique gold, but they are pretty cheap at IIRC about £4 a bottle so if you don't like one, you can try the other
