Mmmmmm ....Moroccan Goatskin book.

Made me feel quite hungry until I saw the price!

But the standard version is a must.

I bought the Porter book on the Lightweights and I have to say it is a fascinating read. Clearly a huge amount of work has gone into it and it does give a practical perspective to the history and development of these cars. It starts with E2A, covers the G.T.E. (not a true series Lightweight, rather Malcolm Sayer's stalled pet project, confusingly called the Low Drag Coupe as against the two Low Drag series Lightweights

) through detailed descriptions of each of the 12 production Lightweights and the two semi-lightweights. Intriguingly Philip cannot write about the no longer extant No 8 'The Third Cunningham Lightweight 5116 WK - S850665' due to ongoing legal action - a sort of super-injunction for old cars!

Buy it, superb value for money.

Is there a Peruvian Yak covered version in the pipeline?

I bought the lightwieght E Type book last week...absolutely stunning. But I can only read a couple of pages at a time...that's about all the facts my brain can absorb at one time! But that doesn't stop me looking at the pictures over and over.

I got the official 50th book since this thread started, for 25 quid new from eBay or Amazon, don't recall. It has stunning production values and is a real visual treat. Nice to see someone applying a bit of creativity and 'art' to the illustrations. Gorgeous.

Which just makes it all the more annoying that there are factual text errors on so many pages. A true feast for the eyes but not for the brain - at least for anorak types anyway. It's still special, but such a shame they didn't give it to a serious E-type buff for a proof check.

As I said at the start of the thread it is a 'coffee table' book but with the resources Jaguar have available you would have thought they would have asked for some factual input - Norman Dewis comes to mind! Porter's book on the Lightweights is in a different league though, with production values to die for and factual detail (with supporting documentation) to keep any E-Type archivist happy for hours. Despite the price I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the E-Type. Philip is on a bit of a roll at the moment with the Iconic E-Type bookazine (which I have just ordered) and a revamp of his definitive E-Type book due out shortly. And, no, I don't get any free 'preview' copies of these books - I have to buy them all.

What's the re-vamp of the ultimate E Type book about? That's another book I can only read for a few pages at a time, and still haven't read the whole thing after maybe 10 years.

I weakened and bought the 50th anniversary book from eBay for ?20 or so, and I like it. When you consider that the monthly classic mags are about a fiver each and have such lightweight content, the coffee table E Type book isn't bad value, and has some stunning photographs.

Leave the facts and stats to Mr Porter's books...buy the rest for the E Type porn!

My understanding it is being extended with corrections, recent discovery and more photographs. To be clear the new edition of "The Definitive E-Type" is the one being re-issued "The Ultimate E-Type" is the new book on the Lightweights.

Oooooo, I didn't even know that existed for the E Type! I'll put it on the shopping list.

I have come across the series of books though. As you know I have a fairly eclectic taste in motor cars, and couldn't resist buying a 2CV last year...an itch I just had to scratch.

It is very strange with bits in unusual places, so I bought the 'How to Restore' the 2CV. A superb book, like the next generation of Haynes manual, except you can see the pictures and some detail! I'm now beginning to de-mystify the 2CV.....still find a gear lever sticking out of the dash a bit wierd though!

You need to buy 'Cat Out of The Bag' by Peter Wilson as well - he worked in the competitions department. Great read.

So apart from the 7(?) Elan's, an Elite, an Isetta bubble car, various Jaguar's and now the 2CV have you any more idiosyncratic cars still to add? Fiat 500 Giardiniera perhaps? :D

If you have a line to Philip Porter tell him I've got a part-proofed copy of the existing tome marked up with many corrections, if he wants to swap it for a copy of the new one when it comes out.

Can't help with a hot line to y'er man - only ever spoke to him for a few seconds as his delightful wife Julie was relieving me of ?90 for the Ultimate E-Type book at the Lindner launch. Besides, it is at the printers apparently so be ready with your red crayon.

Well "The Iconic E-Type" bookazine arrived this morning and I have to say I am hugely impressed. Lots of photos I have never seen before, great detailed article's about Malcolm Sayer, George Harrison, Jools Holland, John Coombs, Martin Brundle and, wait for it .............. Diabolik! Porter has done a good job of creating something unusual in celebration of the E-Type's 50th without' plagiarising' other known material or stuff already published in his books or the E-Type magazine. The fact he has done it for ?4.99 is even more remarkable. Jaguar should have spoken to him before releasing their celebration book.

Don't hesitate - buy it!

Talking about the oficial Jaguar E Type 50 book, there are two details to talk about.

They mentioned in the illustrated guide chapter the E Type Series 1 1/2, and I have read many times that the 1 1/2 were never an oficially model, because oficially jumps from series 1 to Series 2. Is it now the 1/2 an oficial model ?

The 9600 HP is detailed in a picture from one side, were you can't see the registration, also is poorly mentioned in the book, and inclusive was not added to the seminal E Types pictures, where most of the important E Types are detailed. The 77RW is mentioned as the launch car, not the 9600 HP.

It sounds to me very rare. Any bad feelings from Jaguar factory with Mr.Porter ?

The 50 yr book is ?20 new on eBay, so have a shop around before forking out ?46 :)
