Forum Access Problems

Just a quick note to say "Thanks David!", for spending the effort to fettle the forum and make sure that it works reliably.

And as an aside, for anyone who was around for the discussions on Jag-Lovers about how outdated the forum software is and how it should be migrated to a more modern platform... remember that JL was handbuilt from scratch so a migration would involve a lot more than "just" fitting a set of more modern uprated Balljoints as David has done here. Migrating JL would be more like fitting a a GRP body and a Hybrid engine to a Stanley Steamer.

The PM system works like the old pigeon hole system you used to see in Hotels. You send a message and it sits in your Outbox until it is 'collected' by the recipient i.e. read by them.

This of course does depend on the recipient looking at his inbox and we alert people with a) an email b) putting a notification of the number of messages waiting for you next to your name on the home page and c) flashing the latter in red. Nothing you can do to force people to pick up their messages other than maybe add a post in a relevant thread saying "you have a PM".

My problem is that it auto-logs me in, but then when I select the first topic to view it logs me out again, particularly happens on the iPad. Have cleared cache, history, asked it to save my password, etc.

Hmm - I have seen that when we first moved the Forum to the new server. It is a cookie problem which I thought I had got around. You need to clear the cookies from your iPad browser specifically any that are www.forum.etypeuk - there will be three or four of the little blighters. Suggest you do a Google search on clearing cookies n Safari. Also could you try logging in with a different browser - Chrome or Firefox - anything you have not used to access the Forum before as we will not have planted any cookies there.

David, I cleared cookies on my iPad, but the problem didn't clear. I'm logged in on first visiting the website, able to read a couple of threads then when going back to the board index I was no longer logged in, yet it was showing in red sections with new posts, which it doesn't do if you're not logged in. Strange!
I log in again and carry on fine, so will continue like that. Please don't waste time chasing this problem if we are going to see another change of server in the not distant future.

i have deleted all cookies on both browsers, clicked on "remember me", but with both Firefox and Safari, i must always login every time i want to access the forum... Any tips ?

Try clicking on 'Delete all Board Cookies' at bottom of the home page. Exit browser and try again. It is a cookie problem and for some reason the old board cookies are not being deleted entirely from your browser.

I just noticed that I don't seem to be able to quote some posts. Specifically I can't quote the most recent post in a thread, but can quote an older post from the same user in the same thread.

Is this just me?

Nope. Same here..I can only reply sans quote or click the exclamation mark button which I believe 'reports' the post as dodgy somehow. I just cut and paste the relevant chunk in speech marss i.e. lIterally 'quote' it, but it would be marginally easier for the button to be there for the last post in threads as well as older ones.

The above was cut and pasted into this reply. However, If someone else had posted before me, Peter's post woould have become 'quotable'. Clearly an algorithm needs tweaking.

By design. You can't quote the post immediately above the one you are replying to. If everyone were to quote the previous post (and a lot of people did with the old Forum software) the thread would end up long and boringly unreadable. I removed the facility to prevent abuse. We also had examples of people 'quoting' a post with photos in it which meant the thread became even longer with multiple instances of the same. I therefore also introduced a function that automagically converts quoted photos into thumbnails, clickable if you want to see the full size version. So the idea is you treat your replies as part of an ongoing conversation - you would not repeat verbatim a question you have just been asked. However you may want to refer back to a question the learned gentleman asked earlier.

I think the 'quote' habit came from J-L where users were encouraged to include text from previous posts because the system was based on email's.

You CAN 'quote the post immediately above the one you are replying to'. The problem is that very often you can't quote the one you are replying to. More than half the time (at a guess) I respond to the most recent post in a thread and that is the situation where I can't highlight the specific part of a post I'm responding to.

I think the reason may include a desire to prevent quoting a whole thread when the point would be to reply to just the last point.....

I'm as happy to cut and paste as I am to delete (or strikethrough).
