However, he was fully active up until the summer, driving historic cars when I saw him.

From his unique view atop two pinnacles, I remember his insight on 2-wheel versus 4-wheel racing. He said something along the lines that in cars, time after time you had to position yourself on track to the nearest foot in the corners. On bikes, it was the nearest inch.

At one time I thought Rossi might migrate over but it came to naught. Damon Hill did quite a bit of bike racing in his yoof. National level IIRC.

Of course, when scrambling on the average muddy Cotswold weekend, by halfway through the event there was little need to worry about track position. You just had to slot the front wheel into one of two grooves and pretend to be a Scalextric novelty.

A lovely man . I only met him once , when I turned up on the wrong day for the E type's 40th Anniversary at Donington, and JS was demonstrating the W156 ?? Mercedes. Despite my having nothing to do with the team, he and Tom Wheatcroft invited me to tour the Museum with all the MB dignitaries, and I had a fascinating afternoon as a result

Sadly, my younger son was racing in the same race that Henry had his appalling meeting with a stray wheel
