My name is Jay.

The car is in San Frrancisco, I am in Europe.

It's a 1963 OTS.

My first question is what is the value of a fully restored perfect example?

This 1965 4.2 sold at Sotheby's for $308,000 last January and it had modifications.

But now people telling me the market is down on restored cars.

Hi Jay...worth looking at this thread.... viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10427 looks like jaguar are going to start selling at £285k and there is a lhd at £235k not exactly the model your asking about.... are you looking at buying a perfect example, if so post more details here and let everyone look at it for you and give there opinion as to its actual condition and value rather than just generalise

Cars are only ever "worth" what someone is prepared to pay for them on the day. Valuation for insurance purposes will reflect the current market (recent sales). The Hagerty valuation tool would be a place to start and get a ball park figure.

Unless a car has some interesting history or is a very early OSB car you will probably find the cost of restoration is equal to or is more than the market value once restored...

For car value in the states, check out hagertys web site. They have the prices the cars actually sell for and you can check out past trends and price fluctuations.

Compared with Classic Cars Hagerty UK gives slightly lower prices at the top end and higher prices at the lower end. Also their 3.8 prices have separate valuations for flat floor and OSB cars.

Here in the U.S. a professionally-restored 3.8 liter '63 OTS, in original colors and with matching numbers, typically changes hands at about $175k, plus or minus.

Some tasteful modifications, such as upgraded cooling, brakes and electronic ignition do not hurt the market value since these add to the driving experience and are easily reversible.

Good colors, a complete toolkit, proper jack and operating manual all add to the car's value.
