#1 E put to good use

Post by malcolm » Thu Aug 10, 2017 3:38 pm

Yesterday, I had to get the E out of the garage in pouring rain and drive to Popham airfield. Not the sort of day I'd normally choose to get her out. But I'd promised to help at a "Starlight" event. Starlight is a charity dedicated to granting special wishes/providing fun days out for terminally or seriously ill children. Normally at Popham, the kids would be driven round the airfield on motorbikes and specialist cars, as well as being taken for flights by those who have private aeroplanes there. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad that none of the pilots came as they wouldn't be able to fly, and only 4 bikes turned up to be put in the marquee as the field was too swampy to safely take the kids out. That left the cars! So my E went along, as well as a ferrari, a porsche and a few other exoticas. The kids lined up, and we took them out in turn. Trouble is, there's no tarmac at Popham, so we had to drive round a grass track laid out on the field which soon resembled what I imagine Flanders looked like in WW1.

So, slowly we carried on going, with kid after kid scrambling in with muddy boots, and drove off hurling mud inside every E orifice there is.

Today was a 6 hour task with buckets, a hose, and loads of cloths getting it back to resembling an E Type again. Did I regret going? Not at all. What those kids have to endure is nothing compared to semi wrecking your E for a day. It was sad to see so many desperately poorly children, but so good to see them smiling.

I'll be there again next year - anyone else fancy helping?
Malcolm

Well done for not crying off. Ditto the others who turned out. I'm sure you meant the first sentence above the other way around. Actions speak louder than words and you guys deserve all credit.
