Proof of age of engine and gearbox

Hi,

I am looking to import an engine and gearbox from the US for my 1963 FHC, but in order to not pay the hefty duty and VAT that newer items are required to pay, I have been told I need ‘proof’ that the items are over 30 years old to present to HMRC.

I can get clear photos of the serial numbers, etc. but does anyone have any idea how I can get the ‘proof’ of age of the items. (a certificate of some sort?)

The engine block casting date is under the exhaust manifold. I think the gearbox is also dated.

I have a 63 FHC with heritage certificate, cdata plate and block, head, crankshaft and flywheel serial numbers all match with no block date casting, nor evidence of one, also matching gearbox number.

Perhaps not all had such?

One thing about E types is that nothing appears definitive! I wouldn't swear one way or the other it's just that every time l have looked for it, l've found the casting date.

Since no Jaguar XK engines have been produced since 1986, they are by definition over 30 years old. The only later XKs were the handful produced for the Daimler limousine up to 1992. A further clear indication of age is the lack of ribbing on the block - the S3 XJ6 had vertical ribs down the block. These are absent on all earlier engines. Furthermore, assuming it is a 3.8 litre, this is cast into the right hand side of the block and no 3.8 was made after 1967 when the Mark 2 and S type finished

Would it be possible to somehow cross refer the engine number to the chassis number of the vehicle to which it was originally fitted and then use the vehicle heritage certificate as proof of age? Assuming the vehicle is no longer around.

Long shot, perhaps but......
