I had a thoroughly enjoyable day yesterday at The Excel in east London. I have always enjoyed this show because it has focused on the type of cars of interest to E-type Owners. As a result, E-type’s feature with some of the better known marque restorers showing their wares, and some rather less known and showing poor restorations. Each year a friend of mine and I examine closely the quality of restorations paying particular attention to panel gaps and overal attention to detail. Previously, we always rated New Forest Classic as top restorer closely followed by CMC and Eagle. Eagle being the one who is most innovative on modifications. Not many able to match NFC’s interiors. This year top prize goes to CMC who have magnificently restored the 1951 Pininfarina XK120. Only the very wealthy should apply as only offers Over £2m will purchase this car. Best restored E-type by a country mile was E-volution’s modified 4.2 FHC. The modifications were excellent, and the attention to the detail was stunning. E-volition, of course, is owned by Uryk, well known for his superb E-typeFab 5 speed gearboxes. There was also a lot of poor E’s to see. Too much filler, awaful panel gaps, and silly inflated prices. Excellent cars command prices which reflect the time energy and expertise. Notable by their absence this year was Eagle. It might be ok saying you have a 3 year waiting list, but you need to continue to be seen. If any missed this show, go next year!
