#1 MOT

Post by cactusman » Tue Jul 31, 2018 4:34 pm

Well I submitted mine for its annual MOT even though it is exempt. It passed. Hooray.  Just one advisory that the near side rear hand brake efficiency was a little low. No oil on the disc so he said the notorious automatic adjust is probably not adjusted. Ether do it manually or pull the hand brake on a few times to get it to adjust itself. How many home mechanics would spot that from a visual check I wonder.....?? I certainly wouldn't have....

Hi Julian.....assume they used the auto rollers.....these can seriously damage a limited slip diff....unless its a roller designed for lsd....Steve

Yes...but the bloke I use is a classic car nut and has an old mustang. He does a lot of e types...he knows not to lock up and knacker the diff. His rollers test both sides simultaneously and he is careful not to over do either the main brake or hand brake test. He really looks for imbalance using the kind of brake application in normal use with both wheels rotating rather than what the lock up brake force might be. All seems well😀

Julian/Steve,

Glad I saw this post, as I'll be taking mine for its Mot when Angus has signed it off. Don't want the powerlok mashed up....
Are there any specific warnings I should give to the tester? (he's one of the good guys, sympathetic with classic cars, persevered to get my son's Mini MPI through its emission test, which is a well-known challenge....)

Just tell the tester the car has a limited slip diff, they should test the brakes with the Tapley tester.

Hi Jeremy...the Tapley tester is a box with a guage on it the size of a shoe box....the brake test is then done on the road ......i would not rely on asking an mot tester if his brake rollers are suitable for lsd vehicles..in most cases he would probably just say yes even if he didnt really know.... In my experience almost all MOT stations use rollers which are LSD compatible so no need to worry about Taplow meters. This is because many cars use brake electronics to simulate LSD and those that don't tend to be expensive (Porsche, Ferrari etc) so MOT stations are not going to take the risk of failure.
