Hi,

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a Series II 2+2 but there is no paperwork or reg number with it. The only info available are the engine and gearbox numbers. Is this going to cause me a heap of pain or is there a way of getting a heritage certificate and registration docs?

Everything is possible but there is an associated risk with this. If you have any of the numbers you could search on XK data to determine if a car already exists an thus yours might be a collection of bits and not necessarily able to get it registered.

Depending on the price i would question the need to pursue a car like this when this model is readily available
with the proper docs.

Thanks Steve & Phil for replies. I haven't seen the car yet but it is in the UK and RHD. Seemingly half way through a refurbish project and now has no time so all in bits. The attraction for me was that the bodywork is done and now needs all the mechanicals sorted but can't afford time and money if not recognise as genuine at the end.

If the car is advertised then give us a link to look at.....dont worry about someone jumping it to snap it from you they would probably have already seen is.......purchasing a vehicle thats been taken apart can be hard on the pocket....you need to ensure that nothing is missing.......if its an import that was brought in to restore then it probably wont be registered with our dvla yet....but it should have its import documentation which will be needed to register it....there are others on the forum who have imported and will give you more detail...but look up what do i need to register an import....Steve

There are far too many stolen E types around for this to be a safe buy . A car is without identity for a reason : usually it's a clone of an existing car, or a bitsa collection , or an illegal import , no NOVA etc- even when RHD , or a disguised LHD to RHD conversion . Whatever the situation, getting it UK registered in the present climate is likely to be well nigh impossible, and there is always the risk that you will lose the lot if the car or the components turn out to be stolen

Hi JAC.......I had already see this on ebay.......it is worth looking at.......but without any paperwork then walk away... I would visit and get the full story of how it was purchased and imported....it mentions a new front end...assume this meens the frames that should have a chassis number stamped on it...does he still have the old frames with the number on........all depends how much time you want to invest to find out if its genuine.....Steve

Interested to understand why you think/know it is an import Steve? It is a long shot but if he has the chassis number somewhere, can you get all the relevant paperwork resurrected from those 3 numbers (engine, gearbox, chassis)?

I have also seen this on ebay. I don't linger when it I got to the no docs bit. But I also thought it was too expensive. The trouble with a completed bodyshell is that you don't know the 'how and the who'. Alignment is critical. And, as has been mentioned you wont now if you have all the bits, and not all of the bits are available. (and parts are soo expensive these daze!)

I have imported cars from the USA without much trouble in the past but I have been helped by the dealers in the US. However I understand that the DVLA has tightened procedures recently.

Ultimately most sales include an element of trust. A visit will at least allow you to assess the seller. However once you see it you will run the risk of convincing yourself its a good prospect.

Walk away. A better car ALWAYS comes along.

It doesnt say this is a rebuild, so could be just a collection of parts bolted together ? I wouldnt touch it.

Thanks for all your feedback guys and I think I have got the message to walk away.........however, curiosity remains and I had already agreed to talk to the guy tomorrow when he returns from Germany so I shall end the thread tomorrow with an attempt at getting some idea of where it came from.

It is not cheap for what is there and there is still a lot of money to be spent before you have a driveable car. Quotes like "motor ran when disassembled" and "all the hard work is done" should always ring bells.

The lack of any identification numbers or paperwork makes it a registration nightmare and I suspect that this is a major factor in the seller's motivation to quit the car. At best it will be very difficult to register and at worst it could conceivably be impounded if the authorities suspect it may be stolen.

Personally I'd be looking elsewhere. Ideally you want to buy a complete car if at all possible. A stalled restoration can be attractive because they can sometimes be quite cheap but you must have good provenance and all the necessary documentation.

I too would be very concerned on this. Where is the commission/data plate? - these things don't normally rot away. If the car has been imported, does it have the original title docs with it? At the end of the day, it would definitely be in the seller's interest to have as much documentation and data available in order to enhance the sale value. If there is none, I would walk away.

I liked his statement on the description "No silly questions by email" - such as "is it legit" maybe?

Interestingly, the car is 10 minutes down the road from me.
