Hi Julian,
Just a double experience with the ref C16895 temperature sender.
The both I bought give a faulty temp. It's nearly the double of the real temp.
I was obliged to fit the old one wich is right.
Did you have some echo about this problem?
Regards
Mich

Julian,

I know this is not the proper way to measure the belt, but I think it comes out longest in this way:

Image

So the belt is at most 989mm (it's probably about 6-7mm less, as it should be measured in the centre, I believe)

Image

The label says 1010mm.

The 25-28mm is exactly what we are missing....

With regard to the temp senders, I’ve purchased 4 in the last two years, from different vendors each time, all spec’d for the 3.8 and none displayed the temp vs resistance figures required to register the correct temp on the gauge. I spend hours with pans of boiling water, thermometers, Infrared temp guns, ohm meters and eventually gave up. The gauge was to spec, tested via the markers against voltage so I knew that was ok. I ended up putting an in-line fuse in the circuit to get the gauge to register the correct (ish) figure.

Well within industry tolerances of plus or minus 30%.

Richard does the sender make the needle move? If so it must be working. I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

Hard to believe in the plus minus 30%. Are you sure??

Anyway, this setup does not seem to be ready for such tolerances.

That was a joke on Simon's part.

A swipe at the generally poor quality of aftermarket parts.

You must think it's another dumb Pole on the list...

;-)

Just naive, naive... I thought that if you include the Magic Smoke in the cars, the belts could be any length...

Dumb Pole? Certainly not. You don't see me replying to you in Polish for a good reason, because I can't speak Polish. Or any other language with any degree of competence. So you have me at a disadvantage there.

British humour is often lost on other nationalities.

Parts quality is no joke though, although at least Barratts are trying.

Morning All,
Fanbelt update for the 3.8 cars.
We currently have 2 different suppliers on this and have used both based on availability in recent times.
One of these has provided some stock recently that is slightly too short - not as short as 990mm by our measurement but too tight to fit.
We have removed this supplier from this list and will be checking in with any potentially affected customers from recent supply to enusre they have one that fits. Unfortunately its going to be a week or so until all our stock is right so we have stopped sales for now.
Tadek - thanks for your help and we will be in touch shortly.

With regards to the temperature sender - i have sent a private message to Mich to ascertain when and where the stock was purchased but no reply at this stage but we are looking at this.

Good afternoon Julian.
I have also had this problem with temp senders , not just from SNG , we have purchased some from Caerbont direct & they also gave a very high reading both with a new gauge & an original one.
Those senders were from a new batch made late last year.
The only senders we have found to work are the original ones but that supply has now dried up.
I would be interested to hear the out come.
Neal.

Julian
I know from conversations with Julian and his team how frustrating the whole issue of simple dimensions can be for them and how hard it is to check every item that comes into stock. I daren't think how many items they carry in stock and supply worldwide with sales in excess of £20 million. :yellow:
At least in the case of a fan belt it is a non safety critical item.
When I received some suspension components that were the wrong size and material Julian made a point of personally looking into it. Likewise propshaft bolts that were the wrong tensile strength and specification.
Also a brake part that was machined at a slight angle and oversize. All were looked into, a prompt response received and a full refund given.
The headlamp dip bezel that was too thick and the lettering flaking off. An inexpensive item that they probably don’t sell many of but Julian asked me to send an original one to them to see if theirs could be improved.
I think there is currently another thread about the leaking reservoir bottles, again I know from personal experience that Julian and his team have gone to great lengths to look into this.
From a batch of quick release steering wheel bosses with loose fitting splines to a simple bulkhead gasket of the wrong spec all chased up with the manufacturer.

Keep up the great work Julian.

Did you ever find out why the rear fulcrum shaft spacers had ended up 10mm too short by the way?

Thanks for both of these bits of feedback - we are planning some investigation work on the senders tomorrow so i will report in. As it happens, the temperature reading on my own road/race E-type didnt leave zero on my drive to work yesterday so its an opportune time!

With regards to the headlamp dip bezel - we did indeed start from scratch on this and we are pleased with the results:

https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#/UK ... 0c20305%60

Simon, if we had your sample, please let me know if we didnt give you a freebie of the new one.

Yes, there are always challenges and its very often the low volume/high mix nature of what we do that adds to these but we will keep working on them and its associations with environments such as this forum that, while occasionally slightly bruising from our side, keeps us on our toes and in touch with the drivers of the cars we service so its always appreciated.

Hi Julian, the thread about reservoir bottles is "Sovy Failure" and I resurrected it last week as one of mine split (not in the usual spigot area as you'll see). I think if you could come up with a durable bottle you'd sell hundreds of them.

While assembling my e-type and attempting to use SNG parts I came across the following that SNG could perhaps fix....:

BD20436 front exhaust shield assembly, early, for rubber mounted gearbox

Despite the fact that in general making it bigger might be better it is definitely not the case here. It simply does not fit.

Please see the comparison of one I made according to original dimensions (mine is the black one) and the one you sell:

Image

The heat shields were black, originally btw.

BD25237 front exhaust shield assembly, late, for spring mounted gearbox is exactly the same as the one you provide, just the mount is in a different place.
Again, it will not fit until you reposition the mount. They really are not exchangeable, like the SNG website suggests.

BD4052/1 Rubber Overflow Pipe, for Header Tank
What you sell is too short and wrong internal diameter and way to thick on the outside.
The pipe should be 8mm ID, yous is 7mm, but so thick that it does not clear the tank.
On top, what I got was about 20", the pipe originally must have been about 30" long.

Image

C18936 hose connection the tank to petrol filler
The hose you sell is 60mm ID.
The tank and filler diameter are 56mm OD.

Yours, vs. original:
Image

C8975 Rubber Mounting Pad, for Radiator block & expansion tank
Too think.
The pads were originally about 1/4", the ones you sell are 0.33"
All together when compressed on the C18283 distance collar the mount is firm as steel (not rubber , like it's supposed to be).
Yours:

Original (courtesy of Ian):
Image

C19846 Rubber Pad, at Petrol Tank Mountings
You either sell the C8975 of shock absorber rubber.
None of them fit - one has the inner diameter different the other is too thin.

Originals look like this:
Image

Rear lamp gasket set for S1
The set you sold a while ago was way too big. It's gone from the website so maybe a revised gasket set has been designed?

I know these are small items and most of them cost pennies.
But it's really frustrating when you try to mount one thing after another and it does not fit...

It took me 30min to find the right fuel filler pipe (Russian tractor).

I found the right C8975 pads while purchasing parts for my Healey Sprite - GEX7151 fits. Maybe not be perfect, but at least dimensions fit.

It took a number of emails to establish dimensions of the heat shield with a friendly lister.

None of it is really crucial and my life does not depend on it but so frrrustrating when time after time the parts are wrong..

Julian, the list is full of people that will gladly help you to test parts out and help with finding/manufacturing correct ones....

Julian,

The Gearbox mainshaft tab washer C21618 from SNG unfortunately is not correct and does not fit.
The bore of the sng washer is 1.500"-- the original being 1.529".
The tab is bent in the wrong position--it has to clear the root diameter of the thread when fitted to allow the nut to pass. Notice also the small radius at the bend of the tab ---to avoid stress cracks.
Annoying for such a simple part ---no charge for the R&d
