#1 Can someone explain 'FIA papers' please?

Post by PeterCrespin » Fri Mar 22, 2019 10:05 am

This car, like many others that I've seen, claims to have FIA papers:

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1065387

I am confident that this very nice Realm not only has no race car components but is not even vaguely close to D-Type in spec, unless you count a wheel at each corner and a six-cylinder engine.

Don't get me wrong, Realms are great fun and each of mine was wrench to let go, but if this kind of approximate look-alike can get 'FIA' accreditation, what exactly does it mean and what does one have to do to get those papers for a genuine, if not quite 100%, copy?

Yours curiously

If a car, recreation or not, is raced in a FIA sanctioned event, such as a vintage event, it gets inspected by an FIA official at the track, before it can race. If it meets requirements, it gets a small book, much like a passport, which the owner must present at all future events. It adds no value to the car....it simply means that the car, no matter who built it, or what it is, has been approved for racing in future FIA sanctioned events. The fact that its mentioned in the advertisement for this car, means the next owner can race it as well, if he wants. It is not , by any means, indicates its a great rebuild of a great car, it means its a car that meets FIA race craft standards.

I’d regard that as a scrutineering pass certificate and have never raced anywhere that a scrutineer would accept or care about what someone ekse said at a prior event. So assuming an FIA passport doesn’t gain anything in terms of scrutineering, which has to be repeated start-to-finish T each event, is it in terms of compliance with some published criteria and/or eligibility for some kind of racing?

Hi Peter..it depends what FIA papers are being refered to......quote from FIA historic vehicles passports "International historic motor sport competition is governed by Appendix K of the Federation
Internationale de Automobile (FIA) International Sporting Code (ISC).
Each car which competes in International historic motor sport must be in possession of a
valid FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP).
The HTP is essentially a sporting document and says nothing about the authenticity,
provenance, origins, etc, of a car. It is concerned only that the car’s specification is that of
the particular model it purports to be, the whole purpose of the HTP is to try to ensure that
cars accord with the authentic specification and can therefore compete with one another
fairly."

It isn’t a monocoque but a glassfibre skin over a ladder chassis identical to the Cobra kit chassis thry sell. Not one part is D spec and it has independent rear and saloon coil spring front. It cannot compete fairly as it is so different and more developed. Oh well, nothing a 100 Euro note pinned to my application wouldn’t fix maybe!
