Last night I replaced the boot lid springs on my e type, what a pain that was!!!!!
The reason I replaced them was because the boot lid would not stay fully up on its own. Now that I have fitted the new springs, 5 per side the boot lid will still not stay fully up.
My thoughts are that the umpteen coats of 2 pack primers, filler primers, base coats and lacquers are far heavier than what would have been applied to the boot lids when in the factory,that extra weight is what’s pulling the boot lid down.
Has anyone come across this or could advise what could be done.

I did wonder that..... i wanted to get it done ready for the bank holiday weekend here which we are informed is going to be beautiful.
I will contemplate adding more springs now I know how to replace them.

Has anyone come across this problem and have added additional springs to overcome this issue?

Hi All, I also had a couple of broken springs so replaced with 10 new. On opening the boot it would pop up open and then fall half way closed. My solution was 6 springs each side. Possibly a little more force than needed but
Did it 2 years ago and not had any problems since, .
( Carefully used Mole Grips and a vice)

I have just ordered some additional springs, Not a job for this weekend though as I want to get out in it.

Can you use one of your old springs? Haven't done this for a long time but I do remember it being a difficult job.

I Can't see any reason why you couldn't use a couple of old springs. I also think i used slightly longer bolts

I had the same problem with new springs, I’ve got hold of some new old stock springs which appear to be better quality, will either replace them all or add a spring each side as suggested above.

I don’t think it’s a problem with the bootlid having paint on, more likely to be rubbish repro parts, the bootlid on my fathers car had plenty of filler on the bootlid before it was restored and with the original springs it shot open.

I had the boot lid hinges off again today. I fitted 7 new springs to each hinge, now the bootlid springs open and stays up..
