#1 An interesting insight into rising E-Type prices

Post by NSHwest17 » Thu Jan 26, 2017 3:46 pm

Found this while researching why E-Type prices have started shooting upwards. I thought it might be something other E-Type fans would enjoy!

I have linked to it below, let me know if it doesn't work

The trouble is that whoever wrote the article doesn't really know much about the subject - there was only ever 1 low drag coupe, which together with the Lindner /Nocker car are as far as I know the only ones created . A few other one-offs such as the Frua car exist, but this in particular did not attract much interest, let alone a premium, when it was offered for sale as couple of years ago . I would be fascinated to know just how many of the cars which sell at auction at high prices actually reach an end user - there are quite a number of XKs, for example, which to my knowledge just go round and round the trade with the prices being talked up each time. When the music stops........

I find it all rather sad.
The enthusiasts are being priced out of the market and it is making these cars more difficult to use and get pleasure out of.

High prices are only good for investors or if you are selling and moving on.

I agree. I will be the first to concede that, as a fortunate owner, the rising price is in my favour. However I bought my car to fulfil and almost life long ambition. I bought it because I love e types. Yes, when I did join the ranks of owners I did not expect to loose money which made sense as I needed a small loan to buy my dream car for £33k. I kind of expected the value to rise gradually and at least should I ever sell (hell will freeze over first) I would at least get my money back plus a bit to cover running costs.

The intervening four years has seen the valuation spiral out of control so that the last valuation was £90k last time. I am due another this year for agreed value insurance.....who knows what the number might be but I suspect it will break six figures....I could never dream of spending that on a car.....madness.

People are asking me "do I dare to drive it"...sad...it is just a car. And at present the answer is yes....salt permitting.

I do wonder where it will all end. I do wonder how humble workers such as me can ever join the ranks.

Let's all hope that common sense prevails and the investor brigade don't take over from the enthusiasts as that would be a great shame and ultimately to the detriment of the cars and the hobby.

Yes, but even those are running out of sight for the family father like me.

Had a look recently, and a car which could be restored by an amateur like me in the end is above 30 grand.

Now tell me which normal humble human could justify shelling out 30 thousand to buy a more or less wreck of a car ? And invest another 30++ if you do it mostly yourself in the next years ?

I cannot. Mine did cost 10.000 dollars, 7.000 Euros back then, and that was somewhat ok.

At the moment, it would be hard for me to buy just ONE of my cars- they all went out of family man range in recent years.

Its not good to speculate with old cars. It makes my hobby hard, I feel being out-squeezed of the market.

I don't know about others but when I look at the dot graph I do not see any evidence of 'shooting up' since Jan 2015. Instead it looks to me if prices have plateaued out.
It is clear that more and more E-types are being well restored these days and they are then being offered for sale - just look at all the firms that have rushed into the market in the last few years claiming to be E-type specialists.
These nice cars will obviously command higher prices, but it doesn't mean my 'average' car has risen as well because it hasn't had the same level of money spent on it.

As most of us on this forum are enthusiasts through and through and fortunate to own this design icon, I think back to the day when I would routinely check the web sites for a nice series one 3.8 fhc. This would be around 2001/2 and I recall finding a very clean and complete ex Californian black plate car, red with black leather with around 50k miles for 16k delivered into Rotterdam by a Swedish company who seemed to be importing a number of e types at the time.

It was only the red colour that put me off! as I thought 'the one' will materialise. Of course it never did at those prices and despite many searches over the years all that happened was my expectations were continually dashed.

Then in 2003 the original 40k mile 3.8 fhc which had been in our family since 1978 (which I had found funnily enough at Hexagon of Highgate with 22k miles) but since left to fester in a dampish garage and apparently a part of an inheritance suddenly became available! I pulled the car out of the garage on its part deflated tyres and gave it a thorough inspection. Despite the mileage and unused spare from new! oil leaked from every seal, the interior needed replacing and it looked tired, damp and dirty and the paint was bubbling all over (due to a previous respray rejection). 25k would have bought it! but with all the costs involved to make this car right (12k at the time) I offered 13k which was rejected.

I can see now as a complete stroke of luck, I happened to be talking with a colleague where in conversation he had visited 'an old boy' (my father!) who had been the previous owner of a car this colleague had subsequently purchased and was contacting previous owners in search of photos.

I expressed my enthusiasm at the time to purchase a 3.8 fhc and although we had since the initial conversation lost touch, he made contact with me in 2010 to say that he had subsequently found the car I now own (which he had purchased a couple of years earlier) but now wished to sell and would I be interested? He even kept it for me for a few months without advertising it - while I organised my finance to suit!

For without that situation I doubt I would ever have made the effort for with each incremental increase in value I doubted it would continue much further and kept holding back. My car has doubled in value in the intervening 5 years, this only satisfies the 'good fortune' aspect as I will hopefully never come to sell this car.

But to the point will they continue to increase in value? I've got no idea - they could bomb, or China could fall in love with classic etypes! and who does not enjoy seeing value of ones assets increase… at present what faces myself is the desire to have this car back to as good a car as it was designed, purring delicately and all in the order it would have left the factory in April '62

Nope. Just a well presented average E-Type with plenty of miles under the tyres. It's an import. Most outstanding feature is its price. Roughly double a concours car, according to Hagerty's latest valuation.

Worst of all, it's a US spec car . Oh dear , the bubble is being inflated to ever greater proportions . We saw it here only the other day with someone trying to sell a very ordinary FHC for IIRC £ 175,000

French prices seem to peak quite often according to this graph.

Interesting charts. Clearly there are some errant data points that need explanation.

I think those charts have been misunderstood . The years shown are not those in which prices have been achieved, but the years of first registration of the cars

No misunderstanding here. However, without knowing more about the data population it is difficult to see that the French curve's unexplained spike represents anything other than implausible data.

Prices are dearer here in France, and one reason is the Wealth Tax. Cars don't count for that, and they have, until recently, proved to be a better investment than the bank. In the main, the French avoid stocks and shares like the plague. I can't access the advert sadly or else I'd have looked it over, but you might like to see these photos I took a few months back. The current owner was persuaded to buy this car at auction and ended up paying €112,000 all in. Looks quite nice doesn't it for a November 1961 flat floor. That is until you go further down the photos. He thought he could get the car repaired and on the road quite cheaply and then found out just how wrong he was, so he contacted me for advice. So much of the car is saveable and very original but a minimum of £100,000 needed. He found this too dear and asked me to find a buyer but was insistent that he would only sell if he could get his money back. The car sits there and in the current market he couldn't get £60,000 for it.

I wonder what effect the climate change lobby and the " Enviro-mentalists " :mrgreen will have on the whole classic car industry ?
Will large tax increases on fuel make our cars too expensive to run ?
Will we be allowed to only drive them on the road on special occasions ?

Who knows , but if I were looking for an investment right now , I`d be wary of spending a lot on an " E " unless it was of historic significance.

I fear that first of all, we will be the drivers of the „lung cancer cars“.

Or similar.
