#1 Revised data plate and gearbox change

I have recently installed an overdrive gearbox from a 1968 Jaguar 420. I have however, retained the old gearbox. Should I amend the data plate so that the details show the new gearbox number, and if so, how do I go about it? In addition I assume I should tell the DVLA so that their records are updated. Advice gratefully accepted.

Hi Malc....have you changed from Auto to manual.....or just from manual to manual with o/d....as far as im aware you only need to notify dvla if you change any details that are shown on the V5 so Auto to manual yes.....you will open yourself to a possible vehicle inspection so make sure you have everything in place.....is this the only change you have made...is the car an import?.......note that your insurer should be notified of any modification you make...as far as im aware there is no requirement to alter your data plate it does not even need to be on the car....Steve

Hi Steve - thanks for that. The change was manual to manual with o/d. It is an original UK RHD car. The data plate was more for ‘correctness’ really so that the numbers on the plate match the numbers on the car (not that anyone can see the gearbox number). Good point re he insurers - had forgotten that, thanks.

Hi Malc...by changing the data plate it would be misleading and give the impression that the new gearbox was original to the car....Steve

I don't think the DVLA is interested in gearbox numbers - I have never seen one on a V5c. And since the original box is still with the car, even if not in the car, I would not change the data plate either
