#1 What is this car

Post by Rob659 » Mon Jan 04, 2021 6:21 pm

Guys

Im new on here
I do own 3No E types but am no expert on these cars

I have just purchased a fhc that is basically a rolling shell
I bought it from a friend who has a massive car collection

It is a UK car and appears to be a series 1 car
However the vin we have uncovered on frame looks like it starts 1R2xxxx (series2) I have also found what I believe to be a body number
Unfortunately car has no number plates or vin tag

I have today applied for heritage certificate as i want to get the car back on the dvla system

I am wondering if it is a S2 car with S1 back panel and bonnet fitted ?

Question.... can someone on here show me the differences between S1 & S2 in absence of dashboard ?

Also can the vin and body number be cross referenced

The car was opalescent maroon from new and has a webasto sunroof
Its a fhc not a 2+2

I am aiming to restore the car into a historic racer

Kind regards

Rob

The two brackets that hold the centre dash panel have a large hole (1.5") in each one on the S2's - not there on the S1's . There is also a pressing in the upper footwell where the collapsible steering column goes to allow it to fold up in an accident. There are other small changes which will enable you to determine if you have more of a bitsa than you thought.

Thats S1 - so your body is earlier than your chassis number. All very interesting Rob.

Barrie

Thats the problem we cant see the second digit clearly on the vin
It looks more like an R than an E ??? But cant be 100%
We do have a clear original body number

I was hoping it could be cross referenced ?
Or a record is kept somewhere of body numbers

I will call Jaguar heritage tomorrow

All the frame at front is car colour but frame section with stamped vin at very front is black ???

Kind regards

Rob

You will be able to search xkedata and find body numbers of the cars, so should be able to work out where yours fits in.

Series 2 Body No. 4Rxxxxx , Series 1 4Exxxxx

The vin numbers and body numbers are a long way off
I did look on the site
Yes body number starts 4E2xxxx

But the vin is over 200 lower

Thanks for all the help so far

Hi Rob,

You say the  "vin we have uncovered on the frame looks like it starts 1R2xxxx (series2)" . I presume you are referring to the stamped number on the top right hand side of the picture frame where the shock absorber mounts? Does the picture frame have a bracket extending forwards that the fan motor attaches to?

Yes the stamped number on the top of the frame that shock fixes to

Its hard to see the second digit on vin It could be an ‘E’

Im assuming its unwise to post picture of vin stamping on here

Hi Rob,

Post a picture of the whole frame and also a close up picture of the first 3 digits of the Vin number. Cover the rest with tape or a piece of paper.

when you click on "post image", you will see a sign saying "do not resize". Click on that and choose a smaller size before selecting your photo. I use 1280 X 1024 and it always works ok.

When you click on "reply" to compose your message, at the bottom, you should see "add image to post". Click that. You then get a post image box which opens saying "do not re-size my image" You click on that line to re-size.

No it does not have the bracket

The vin number is an E not R ive just very carefully dug it out with a sharp pick
However i have a feeling this front section has been replaced
Both my other cars have all the frame sections the same colour
This car has the side frames body colour and the rad frame with the vin is black ??????
The stamped vin is now very clear but is it the correct number ?????
I have a body number from a tag at back of car
Also the same body number is hand written on inside of tailgate
All the inside of car inc panels are the original colour same as frame rails at front
It looks like opalescent maroon
It cant be a hard car to trace as it has a webasto roof

It will be nice to see if numbers match but i have not herd back from Jaguar heritage yet

Still cant upload pictures
The picture upload bit has gone from this reply box ?

The absence of a bracket would suggest this is possibly the picture frame from a late Series 1.5 or Series 2 car.
Clausager states that this would be March 1968 chassis number 1E 21807 to July 1968 chassis number 1E 21958 for FHC rhd. From August 68 you move on to the 1"R" chassis number for the Series 2.

IF your picture frame is the correct one, IF your car is a FHC rhd and IF the chassis number is 1"E" that narrows down the possibility to by my calculation 151 cars. A search of XKE data should narrow it down further.

However this is ONLY in relation to the picture frame and number stamped into it. You state above that you suspect this has been changed at some point. A bit more research on the body number will show whether it falls within the above mentioned 151 cars but there is no guarantee the body and frames are matching.

Hi Rob...as far as im aware Heritage work on a confirm or deny system....they will not fill in the blanks without you supplying registration documents and other info..engine /gearbox numbers......its quite easy to buy a body shell that still has its body number....and quite easy to change a body number its only a rivited on tag......if Heritage were to give out chassis numbers then anyone could create a "lost car"......very strange that there is no registration docs, vin plate, stamped vin, engine, gearbox......so my assumption is that your body,s identity could well be existing on another E or Replica car....... So even if you find out the correct chassis number to match the body......there could be another E out there that has the same identity..it might not even be registeted on xkedata and might only come to light in years to come.........I have not heard of dvla registering a car with only the chassis/body number...and they are now doing inspections to check authenticity.....Steve
