NO Overdrive box will fit in a Short Wheel base E type . I have a suspicion that Julian has an OD box from which the OD has been removed i.e. the gearbox has been changed back to a non OD design
In relation to the photo shown at 41 I am mystified as to what the apparatus to the left of the OD is ??

I would think the huge canister type piece sticking out the side would cause problems fitting it into a 2+2....but if your prepared to start cutting metal its up to you.....but why would you want a 3 syncro.....Steve

Hi Rob.....if i were you i would put up a new post in the technical section. .......Gearbox optinons for a FHC........you should get some answers...im not sure on the xj6 box becaus i dont know what tail section it has.....most are o/d boxes and as said not a straight fit plus you would need a different top gearbox cover to get the gear lever in the correct E type position....currently about £800 new.....Steve

This is what you need to fit in the small space that is the E-type tunnel.

Sorry Christopher....the OD is very much still there.....I have even cleaned the oil filter....at present it is non working but that is due to an issue with the solenoid which will be a bugger to remove....I even have an old service report indicating it has worked....my car is proof that it can be done....although I didn't do it...
As an addendum it is an all synchro jag box....

#48 Re: What is this car
I would love to see a build picture on an OD box going into a SWB. When I say it can't be done I mean not without major metal cutting in stressed areas.
Things are so tight there and UJ access so tricky, that inserting a box that is a full seven inches longer to the prop flange, with the transmission mount pin six incher further rearward than standard, presumably must mean cutting the tunnel and the crossmember.
I can imagine it greatly enhancing a well-used car, and until/unless you sell it as its current steward the value issue doesn't arise. But I think I'd rather fit a five speed or taller diff gearing and leave the tunnel virgo intacto

Yes Peter...i would like to see a photo of whats been done to Julians car to get the o/d fitted.......if nothing else i would reccomend that Jullian gets the area fully inspected and if needed o/d removed and the area put back to standard.......I dont know how long his o/d has been fitted but there were modifications made and crossmembers cut out in early years that seriously damaged a cars structual stability......Steve

Have you had a quote? That is a serious bit of fabrication to get it looking smooth and correctly curved all around?
Going back to the earlier ID question, one of the best defences against running into ID trouble is to state publicly what car number you have, and the sooner the better. That way, anyone claiming it as their number has to predate your claim if neither has full provenance history. Even the downside of going public (someone coming out of the woodwork and pointing out that ID is theirs, not yours) is better realised ASAP and dealt with in whatever way BEFORE you invest in a car you may lose. Race vehicles are especially suspicious, as they often fly below the DVLA radar for years....
Someone brighter than me will have to explain why it's better not to put an ID in public view here or on xkedata.com, because to me it is suspicious. You need to proclaim ownership, not hide it.
