#1 Hardtop latches -- S1 vs. S2

Post by E703SU » Tue Jun 29, 2021 1:54 am

Scanning the jag-lovers archives, I see that the 3 front latches (the center and 2 outers) for the S1 hardtop are different from those of the S2. (courtesy of Richard Liggitt: http://www.xkebooks.com/images/Hardtop.pdf 1
I have a few very basic follow-up questions:
1. Does that necessarily mean that an original hardtop with S1 latches will not properly latch into a S2 car?
2. If it won’t, could those S1 latches be immediately replaced with S2 hardtop (or soft-top?) latches that use the same drill holes? Regarding S2 hardtop latches: are they available – either new aftermarket ones (I checked three of the leading usuals, and no one seems to carry them) or refurbished ones found online without too much difficulty? And as for the possible use of S2 softop latches on a hardtop, one supplier’s catalogue seems to suggest that at least the center latch works for both the hardtop and soft-top for the S2.
Thanks,

Hello Guido,
The difference is the S2 variants have thicker, more robust levers.
There shouldn't be an issue with fitment.

You could even have two of one style and the centre catch of the other and only concours judges would notice
