#1 One E-Type less in the world

Post by SEJohnson95 » Wed May 06, 2015 7:29 am

I heard from my friend Simon Bennett last night, this happened about two weeks ago:

"07" went from looking like this:

To this  :( :(

Can't imagine what that must have been like :/ He had time to save his 80 Merc Convertible, Vespa and old 911 but not 07 unfortunately. His other 64 Coupe project car was unharmed as it was elsewhere. Thankfully (and most importantly) everyone was OK.

Shocking!

Perhaps, when the investigation into this has concluded, the cause of the fire could be made known?

I spoke to him about it last night and the circumstances seem most strange. The car was completely cold and he went into the garage to shuffle her about. Choke on, starts her up and there was this almighty backfire through the carbs. He reckons they were slightly overfuelled. (Normally backfires are contained in the air plenum? He's running Webers though) He thinks some fuel got onto the exhaust and up she went (that's all he could think of.) He got the fire out initially with an extinguisher but it went again and he couldn't control it :/ "terrifying and agonising"

That is the problem with Lotus Elans, and the diminishing numbers. Owners of Weber equipped cars think it is a great idea to remove the air filter box either for the increased induction roar or when trying to make adjustments when the car is running. The notoriously difficult Webers can easily cause a backfire and given they are sitting just above the distributor ................ Same with the E-Type unfortunately. :(

He's working on his insurance company now, salvage rights etc. He has it all insured with every modification so it should be ok. Is it too far gone you think?

Indeed. No seriously though, I mean the shell must be warped but is the metal useable? at least most of the interior bits can be found. Engine is likely had it though?

Anything can be resurrected but why bother - the 2+2's are not exactly rare cars.

I guess so but it's the sentimental value. You lot remember it being a 2+2 when it has the ID of a FHC? Well it was reshelled by a P.O and he was in the middle of prepping a FHC shell (hence his other project) to then transfer all of the bits back from this car to make it a FHC. Unfortunate that he was only a month or so from stripping this one down again :/

True although there are many around the need saving. Someone scrapping a 2+2 for a 4.2 engine springs to mind?

That's a great attitude Simon, remind me which E-type model you own again?

I'm all for keeping 4.2s Ian I was acknowledging the fact that they are plentiful in supply and definitely worth saving. It came out wrong. I should have just said "that being said, etc etc" I was referring to someone I know of who scrapped a 4.2 to put the engine into a 3.8 that's what I meant.

It was being a little provocative, sorry. I've nothing against 2+2s.

It's very sad to see another classic leave us this way (or any other way, for that matter...), but the important thing to realize is that nobody was injured--or worse--and from what I can see from the photos, the fire was confined to the garage.
