Replacing Chrome Windscreen Trim
#1 Replacing Chrome Windscreen Trim
I just wondered if anyone has tried to replace one of these. I ordered a secondhand one for my series one coupe (I thought it would be safer bet than one of these poor quality copies) But it didn't fit properly and didn't match the one I had on the opposite side. I was told that this is normal because each blade was hand made to fit each individual car....

Thanks very much Yves. I can see that is a great way to glue them in place. Unfortunately, I am still at the point of getting the right shape blade. I when I asked if it was the correct one for a series 1 4.2 coupe I was told that all the series 1 trims were the same. Maybe they were.. But from the photo (comparing it to the opposite side) it looks very different

Hi Mark they could not be hand made for each car as the car would then have to wait till they came back from the chromer and polisher. ......however on a restoration its not unusual for chrome items to be fettled to fit then sent off for chroming......as a second hand piece you dont know its previous life......Steve

Spot on Steve, as usual..
And after paying close to £200 for a secondhand piece of trim you would expect to at least know its source and suitability.
Having said that...fair play to the guy at Northern Jaguar, he did also suggest that I send it back if it didn't fit.

Has anyone heard from (or has other contact details of) Northern Jaguar..?
I sent back this chrome trim as per his instructions, but they are not returning my calls..
I only have a mobile number for them.

Doesn’t he spend time out of the UK so may not be responding to calls?

Well I finally got a refund.
It took a couple of emails.. apparently he forgot I'd sent it back.
-maybe he was out of the country an' all. -didn't get my calls..
Anyway. Martin Robey do the trims. Really good quality new part, for about the same price.
And they fit :-)

In my view the thing folks don't allow for is that even if you use the trims that came off that particular car originally by the time the car has been repainted the A post has a thicker layer of filler/primer/paint/lacquer on it than it did out of the factory and they won't fit when you come to put them back on. Certainly true in my case and they hadn't been rechromed either.

John, I take your point about the paint/filler (and these trims fit over the rubber seals). But it was the profile that did not match. You can see this in my second photo. The 'bullet' end is more blunt. And it was longer. On top of that, it seemed to have a piece filed off it (see photo)..
To be honest I didn't mind that I would have to scrape off 2 layers of cement/glue from the inside. Neither also that there was traces of mustard yellow repaint followed by signal red on the chrome side. But I did expect it to be a match in shape. Fair play to the guy, when I called him he did point out that he'd never said it wouldn't be a second hand part.... But I did expect it to look like one of the shiny new looking ones on the website photo. especially as it was £195
What I didn't like was that the guy was uncontactable after I'd sent it back...
