#1 Is my toolbox genuine?

Post by dlgis » Thu Dec 23, 2021 10:10 am

As far as I understand it the e type came with a tool roll, but mine has a tool box that fits neatly into the spare wheel, with E type Jaguar 3.8 Tool Kit written in gold (leaf? ) on the cover. Is it the real deal or were these a popular Halfords item in the 1960s?

Never supplied with the E-Type but was fitted to the Jaguar saloon's.

The E-Type toolkit has different contents (see the Factory Fit section for the 3.8). The other giveaway that this is not for a 3.8 E-Type is that it has the ratchet present in it for the later versions of the metallifacture jack whereas, for the 3.8 E-Types, the jack had an integrated handle.

Does have e type written on it though. Perhaps some enterprising chap was adding the wording and flogging them on Exchange and Mart

A bit of kidology at work, I'm afraid.

Some gold Letraset added to a saloon car toolbox to fool the unwary.

I'm sure it wasn't intended to deceive.

A photo in Philip Porter’s “Jaguar E Type, The definitive story” p151 shows a toolbox just the same in the spare wheel of a very early FHC. Maybe they used one readily available for the early cars before deciding on a tool toll? Any thoughts?

And now read what Haddock says “I’m aware of two tool-case varieties. On a few early cars, the tools were kept in the round sedan-type case that stores in the spare tire.”

Though I’m guessing the case above is probably not an early one, just a copy as suggested.

And here is another which is regarded as definitive of what was supplied with customer cars:

The saloon toolkit was a pre-production trial but Jaguar realised E-Type owners were going to be more hands-on and would require a more comprehensive set of tools. The round toolkits were all painted black with no logo's or identifiers.
