Just in the process of ordering a Strongman Clifton scissor lift which given my height and width restrictions seem to be the best option.
However I am concerned about leaving the IRS hanging when the body is lifted. I have looked at transmission jacks to support it but these seem to start at 1.1 metres minimum height.
Has anyone any experience of an alternative means?

As long as you're not leaving it for months at a time it should be fine.

Hi Simon...as Andrew says above.....almost every e type resto garage uses 2 post lifts and for general work they do not support the irs.....the irs cant crash to the floor if the propshaft is still connected.....Steve

As a matter of interest does any forum member already have a Strongman Clifton lift? If so can you post photographs of it lifting a FHC and the positions of the lifting points.

I was looking for something like this but didn't buy as I'm still not sure these scissor lifts are for me. I did see this picture and just found it again:

They appear to use the radius arm mounts at the rear which makes sense but, at the front, the blocks seem to be at the inner vertical wall of the footwell - you can't be sure.

I'm not sure that there would be a lot of room in front of the IRS to make it easy to work on that in-situ and so I didn't see a huge advantage for me at the rear. I usually lift the complete front with a hardwood block in the picture frame and then add axle stands under the lower trunnions so I also didn't see a great advantage for the front end.

I've only recently thought about a lift so haven't forgotten this idea. I'd hope there would be some exhibitors at the Goodwood Revival next month and will have a look when we're there. There is a reasonable chance they would have an E-Type on for display so perhaps I can get a photo. I'll also ask what depth of concrete is needed for the floor and anything else that I think of.

Thanks for your responses, and for putting my mind at rest regarding the hanging IRS.
I too have slight concerns about lifting the front on the base of the firewall, but I have seen a few E Types lifted at this point without damage. Strongman also do a cross beam to enable lifting at the lower wishbone points which I may ultimately purchase.
I am going to need to drop the engine/gearbox and this lift should give me enough room to do that.
Just for info I did also look at the Automotech AS7530 but bought the Strongman because it does not need an auxiliary air supply.

It's how we lift cars all the time.

You need a suitable piece of wood (6x3x2") to sit on the flat bit at the front of the floor pan.

Personally I would still support the IRS.
It may be an unlikely event but this shows how far a S1 IRS moved when the mounts failed when the car was on a 2 post lift. How progressive the failure of the mounts was I don't know but when the last one let go that was a 310lb (140kg) hammer dropping several inches onto anything or anyone in range below.
