Danny, you are a sad man.
He says, whilst holding an almost identical bag of thumbscrews, purchased from Ebay at the weekend.
Great minds must think alike.

Don't forget to use rubber washers or O rings to prevent them coming loose.

They are M4 thread, one may have to re-tap the original threads. I will let you know once its done.

There are no real threads in the instrument panel sheet metal, only those cut by the self tapping screws which may be all over the place if they have been inserted many times. Best to run a tap gently through but remember there is not much metal to bite into.

Tried it but really on mine it requires tapping. Had to order a bit cause my 4 mm is missing from the kit…

I used #8 nutserts when installing thumbscrews on my car years ago. It does require drilling out the screw hole to fit the insert.

Good idea, might try this if tapping doesn’t work.

Am I correct in assuming that this modification is for S1 cars?
I have a similar problem with my S2 refitting the radio console which removal of the legend strip would facilitate but looking at the assembly details suggests the strip is screwed in from behind the drop down panel.
A photo, presumably of a S1 car with this modification would be helpful, just to see where the thumb screws are located.

S1 - normally secured with four self tapping screws but for this application we only need to use the two outer holes.
S2 uses a spring clip to secure the indicator strip.

Tried the re-tapping method its ok but not brilliant. Ordered some 4mm rivnuts to turn it into a proper job.

It's a pity you didn't buy the ones with the black plastic head.
They become totally invisible when mounted.

These are small enough to disappear in the under dash darkness
