Le Mans 24hr

Hi,
Sorry this is not an e question.
I would like to try the Le Mans experience before it gets too late.
I won't be taking the old girl or the wife.
I should like to camp to get the full experience.
So next year for the standard race or the year after for the classic.
What are members opinions of the two?
Is it best to be near the track or further away?
Is it possible to get any sleep?
As I live in the south west thinking of St.Malo or Cherboug.
The organised trips want you to drive up to Dover.
Must be possible to DIY.
Has anyone been who would like to share their experience?

Hi Nick,

we use Airtrack for the 24h ,its camping in a private infield compound with security on the gates,showers,toilets a marquee with a bar and a band on saturday night,more civilised but you still get the atmosphere.Airtrack is now owned by Thomas cook.Sleep not a problem for me-just drink!

We've also used Airtrack for the last few trips to the 24h and I would agree with Steve that it's far more civilised with their own toilet and shower blocks

Some of you may have read of the bad experiences of visitors to the Classic Le Mans in the E-type magazine.
What do people here think?
What are the merits of the standard Le Mans 24hr against the Classic version.
As a spectacle?
As a place to camp?

Nick,

I have been to about ten 24 hour races since 1987 and 2 Classics. The Classic and the 24 hours are quite different races; their common link is that they share the same circuit. The Classic has a tremendous amount of variety in the competing cars, but the older cars are not racing continuously as they are in the 24 hours - you couldn't expect them to. The crowds are smaller for the Classic, and pit access is easier/cheaper. You would really have to go to both races to see which appeals to you more. In either case, the amount of protective fencing around the circuit has now distanced the spectator from the experience and made unobstructed photography harder. The Goodwood Revival is a much better experience from this pov.
