#1 Hagerty Insurance - New rules, Not What it Was.

Post by TMC29L » Tue May 16, 2023 11:05 am

I have been with Hagerty for around 15 years with several classics, including the E Type, on the policy.

I paid around £470 last year for the E, a TR4a, a MK II 3.8 and an X300. I sold the Mk II (value 35k) and the TR4a (30k value) and bought a 1948 Allard L Type (value around 35k), so now one less car and lower overall value insured.

This year's renewal came in at £950!

The explanation for this is that a collector's discount, which I had always had previously, no longer applies, as you have to have 6 cars or more and/or over £250k total value to qualify. This is a recent shift in policy apparently. In addition, I have noticed that they do not reply to emails and it now takes them an age to answer the phone and you end up on a ringback system. It wasn't like that in the past. Standards slipping and they no longer want lower value business? I did read somewhere that they have been making losses in the US so maybe that's why.

They eventually got the renewal down to £655 but Peter James has quoted just under £530.

I to have been with Hagerty for many years, insuring my 3 classics ( agreed value in excess of £250,000). And the renewal premium this April shot up to a tad under £1,000!!
Eventually went with ClassicLine and saved £400! And they respond almost immediately and politely to e-mails and phone calls.
This was with an increased mileage allowance. Apparently, it’s not a group policy, the cars are insured individually.

Hagerty emailed me to ask why I wasn’t renewing, so I replied saying I had got a better quote - they never bothered to get back to me. It’s a shame as in the past I had found them very easy to deal with and to talk to.
I understand that they are now American owned, whether that’s got anything to do with their current service?

It’s obviously worth shopping around.

"I understand that they are now American owned, whether that’s got anything to do with their current service?"

That has got everything to do with it!

I’ve been with Hagerty Insurance for all my classic motorcycles for a number of years and always found them easy to deal with. I’ve just received the renewal which has only increased by £3.00 from last year. I still shop around before I’ll commit though. My cars are insured with Peter James.
