The 'E' Type Forum

Hi. As it says above, I'm new here although I've been dropping in and reading posts for a while.
I'm a long standing classic car enthusiast and enjoy being able to work on my own, and occasionally, other peoples cars. I'm also a great supporter of forums like this. They are a wonderful source of information and advice. I try to contribute to the ones for my other cars as much as possible.
I've wanted an E Type for many years and the stars have finally aligned so I may fulfill that wish soon.
Now I hate to start with a question but....
Does anyone know where I can buy a towbar for an E Type? I know it's unusual and may not be popular but a towbar is an important addition to any car I own. I've searched the internet with no luck. A couple of times I've seen an E Type with caravan showing at the Great Dorset Steam Fair and a TV commercial has featured one towing a trailer so at least 2 cars have them.
If anyone knows where I can buy one or has one I can copy, I would be very grateful.

Welcome indeed I think the sight of an etype towing a caravan would be cool but I did wonder whether the height of the tow ball would sit a bit low?

While it is clearly not impossible to attach a tow bar, the structure of the E type is SO not designed for this. Thin sheet metal everywhere, with no major structure aft of the IRS and IRS mounting area. And the IRS is designed to move somewhat relative to the main body shell, so tying the two together would not be advisable.

Stop and think: why is evidence of E-types set up for towing so rare?

I suppose it depends what you're towing. A caravan would be a no-no for me (having done it with many cars) but if you're just towing a small trailer with equipment, then maybe ok. I saw an E Type at the Faversham show that was towing the rear half of another E Type (FHC) which was used to stow equipment. Looked confusing, but pretty good!

I've just called CMC unfortunately with no success. The only E Type they've seen with a towbar is the one they made as a one off which they engineered into the rear of a series 1 when they stretched the car.
