I have the cylinder head nice and clean now - any recommendations for a paint that can take the heat and stays fixed to the alloy?

I need Gold paint.

I know SNG, Frost and numerous others sell a number of variants but i prefer to get t right first time

Jaguar used Bradite Old Gold Metallic (Bradite still exist but I am not sure if they still supply it: http://www.bradite.com/ ) on the cylinder heads until mid 1966 and then left them as natural alloy. No doubt more penny pinching from Mr Arthur Whittaker, Jaguar's chief materials buyer If you can't get any from Bradite the SNG stuff is probably correct.

Bear in mind that you should be able to use ordinary car body paint (ie spray cans from Halfords) as the head shouldn't be getting that hot. I have used it on mine with no issues.

Hi Adam,
I've just contacted Bradite and they say they no longer do the 'Old Gold'. What was the name of the product (and colour code if necessary) you got from Frosts?

Would anyone know of any alternative suppliers and what the names of products I could use? I'll ask at SNG in any case.

I hate to tell you all this, but I use gold plastic model paint, and it lasts well and is easy and neat to apply with a brush

I got mine from SNG Barratt.

Be careful some paints are too thick and the paint will pucker up when you tighten bolts to it although I cleaned my surfaces first. But these paints are also too glossy.

I'll try and take a pic tomorrow and paste it up

Ken Verity recommended Hycote Double Acrylic in Ford Arizona Gold (met) to me. I used 2 cans (150ml) and am really pleased with the result.

This is the stuff I used from SNG though pic taken before was fully dry. Its a few shades lighter in real time

I know its an old thread, but ... SNG just wrote me there are about 20 people now waiting on their paint, and they have no idea when it'll be back in stock.

I thought about VHT SP132 gold- what do you think ?

Dunno Carsten but I managed to blow a fair bit of my VHT gold off yesterday while using compressed air to get rid of water in the head valley after washing the car.

I used a 15ml tin of gold Humbrol model paint!...........paints on nicely and has been there 17 years.............much cheapness!

the last cylinder head I painted, I have used etch primer in a rattle can first. I hope this, which sticks like the proverbial stuff to a shovel, will keep the gold paint on.

I think the proverbial stuff sticks famously well to blankets, but the expression 'it goes like s**t off a shovel" implies very poor adhesion to same. Perhaps you mistakenly got etch-primer overspray onto your shovel?

The rattle can I recently received from SNG is rebadged Duplicolor DE 1604...the numbers are printed on the bottom of the can. Sold at a price premium, plus shipping. I specifically asked the sales guy if it was rebadged or a special mix. He "didn't know". Exactly the same as a can that I already had purchased at the local auto parts store, and tested on an old V12 cam carrier. I disliked the greenish cast...which was why I went to SNG in the first place. I subsequently purchased VHT SP404, which is a metallic gold. Far too metallic in the trial run, but better. Then I oversprayed the VHT patch with a very light coating of the Duplicolor....just right to my eye. I started with VHT hi-temp primer...then the color combination. Looks very close to the photos in the "Factory Fit" section. By the way, the combination went into an oven (300F) at the machine shop when I decided late in the process to replace all valve seats. Stuck like bark on a tree.

Today, I bought 2x14ml of Revell enamel gold paint, no. 94. Total cost 3.20 Euro.

Now, wich parts of the head was painted ?

Valley (sure)
Front, chain housing ? No ?
Sides ?
Rear end ?

Here's some pictures of Richard's 3.8 cylinder head from a while back, hope this helps. The original paint was still on when he got it so we're pretty sure it was done right!

I paint mine with SNG spray.

Thanks Mich 7920. Regretfully, SNG are out of stock and do not know when new supplies will arrive. I believe the paint comes from America! There are so many shades of "gold" I will just have to keep searching :-)
