#1 Block after head removal

I thought I would share a photo of my engine after removal of the cylinder head, it's a short stud block so the studs don't go through the coolant jacket

Maybe rust due to a shot head gasket?

Those studs on the exhaust side look knackered !
They sit just into the water jacket. I took advice from the forum and sealed them with permatex.

Hi Tim,
After a good effort and with my friends assistance, as well as2 bottle Jack's, (it was stuck solid) it finally came free today, and thanks to your contribution I have a nice new set of studs to replace those rusty ones.
I just need to strip the head and make sure it's not warped before putting it back together

My thoughts would be as to why the exhaust side studs are rusty whereas the inlet side are not.

Appreciate that you will replace the studs but where did the water come from ?
Hence my comment that they sit just inside the water jacket . If you remove the plugs in the block on the exhaust side you can see the base of the studs. This is why I asked the question about sealing the thread to stop water creeping up the stud.
I was recommended ( and used) permatex 56521.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
By remove the plugs I refer to the screwed plugs near the face of the block. Not the core plugs further down. Which is where the studs on long stud blocks sit surrounded by water.

Yes my thoughts exactly on the rebuild, there are signs of gasket sealant on the timing chain cover and sump so something has been done, I have measured the bores and its on standard sized pistons so it's either had new liners or maybe new rings, there was no receipts for the engine rebuild, but to be fair I got the car at a very good price for a series 1 uk matching numbers roadster, I plan to drive it for a few years then do a full rebuild as my retirement project. I have bought the Permatex sealant for the studs already.
