#1 Heres a weird question

Post by henda » Thu Aug 01, 2024 6:48 am

Looking at the Heritage certificate which I inherited with the car it was originally light blue with a blue hood. It has at some point been resprayed gunmetal grey. I feel the blue hood doesn't go with the bodywork of the car.
Here comes the question, can you dye the hood with something or is it a case of a new hood?

Google is your friend...there are dye products out there..iv never used one...also look at the boat community they use lots of canvas....Steve ps..I assume results will depend on how much waterproofer/wax your hood has.

Paul, how good is your hood, particularly in fit and weather proofing. Many owners have problems with water leakage at the forward edge and around the windows. Could this be an opportunity to have a new hood fitted and made as watertight as possible? Just a suggestion.

You have a very valuable car.

Buy a new hood.

Thanks All, I have had a price off Aldridge, £2,500 fitted. The issue I have is there is nothing wrong with the hood that is on. Its just a personal preference really. There's also the fact that Aldridge are 4.5 hours away and they need the car for a week.

Don’t be tempted as I was to use anyone who claims to have fitted e type hoods.
I purchased a hood from Aldridge (perfect) and used a local “experienced trimmer” to fit.
Total cost about £1k. Seems cheap you think. Unless you factor in that the job is appalling. I’ve improved it over time but it will never be great.

From my experience of using Aldridge for other works they can be trusted to do the job correctly.

£2500 may seem a lot but will be forgotten once you a perfect job.

Paul, you are gradually learning the life of E Type ownership and I hope the big smile is still on your face.
There are ups and downs and niggling things like the colour of your hood.
OK, Aldridge are a distance away from you but class it as a winter job. That way you’ll enjoy driving and learning more about the car during summer and autumn, maybe finding a few other things to be tidied up or tweaked for better running.
You say the hood is a good, but check the fit in the rain. Even if you never plan to drive in the wet you can get caught out and a good fitting, as water-tight as possible, hood will be very welcomed.

Just be very sceptical about resale value of your old hood. As said above, to be as good as you would like, these need to be individually fitted by professionals, for this reason your discarded hood will be worthless; leave it at Aldridge and save yourself the disposal fees. It also means, seeing as it is already a perfect fit, you may as well have a go at dyeing it, if this doesn't work out you've lost nothing compared to the new hood alternative? Dyeing is very easy and there should be plenty of shops that will do this for you. A post dyed hood is every bit as good as a pre dyed, imo.

Thanks All,
I have watched some videos on you tube about it and I am leaning towards the new hood. It is my dream car and I want it as perfect as I can. Your right if I do get caught out in the rain, it would be nice to also know its going to be dry, as I know the one that's on was described by my Aunty as shower proof-ish. So Aldridge here I come, I may wait until the winter and trailer it down. Am sure the wife will be over the moon with her new hood for Christmas!!!!!!!

If you are going to put a new hood on the car, and if you haven't already, you could ask BAS to quote as well. They specialise in car hoods, which, I think, is how they started out in business.

I have had trim work done by both Aldridge and BAS and they're equally good in my experience.

Regards
Stuart

Hi All, I've spoken to BAS today regarding price. they are going to get back to me. It is a bit further to travel for me. I have added it to my winter job list which is growing by the day.
