A very nice looking fully restored triple black E-type roadster, with removable hardtop, was just sold for a whopping $300,000 at the Gooding & Co auction in Monterey, CA.

An equally nice ‘67 Coupe (silver over red, with painted wires) was just hammered sold at $205,000.

Presumably both, or at least the first, will be permanent trailer queens? Their owners only interested in gaining silverware at “concours” shows

I see news about an upcoming recession, interest rates sunk a bit, and Gold is at all time high again.

So maybe there are some people who had obviously lot of cash around and thought, shares not safe, gold too expensive (and maybe they already have a ton or two?), so lets have a look into bluechip cars like 300SL and E Types ?

Or maybe thats just crap ?

Am suspicious that there are very few close up pictures, 70+ of them are more mood than content, and the under bonnet ones show a pretty tatty condition ………

I can't explain it.

I heard today that UK Auction Houses are turning down E types because prices have slumped so much that the cars are hard to sell.

Is that true? What's the experience of those who follow auctions and their prices?

It does seem so. The % of cars selling is low, 1 in 4 at one auction I was watching, and always below estimate. The hierarchy of values (flat floor ots to series 3 fhc; uk original v import) is much more compressed than it was in the boom days. A good usable uk original series 1 fhc 4.2 recently went for 58k inc fees after some after auction haggling. A lot of cars at agents hang around unsold for ages ( years in many cases). Probably SOR cars where the owner is enjoying free storage

The K500 index from Simon Kidston claims to log all auction results, plotting values over time.





Certainly his currently-quoted "value" figures seen above do not appear to reflect the market that we think we are seeing in the UK auctions.

My impression in Milan, November 2016 - was that we were living some mad rictus moment after which everyone would wake up with a headache - or, as Kidston himself wrote -

The fact is that an E-Type is such a difficult car to restore to a really good level, with so many pit-falls, that it's extremely difficult to judge a car without spending a lot of time underneath it, and then driving it a decent distance, such that I don't think I could ever have bought one at an auction.

To be honest, I don't think prices really reflect the quality (or not) of the cars at all, but rather what discretionary spending is limited by at any particular time.

Assessing the quality of a restoration is something that really requires first hand experience of doing those restorations, and where the tricks and traps are.

E Types are no more or less difficult to restore than any other car. Every car has it's foibles. They're just more likely to actually turn you a profit than your mint Austin A40 Farina.

Buying any car at auction is a gamble. Personally it's not my cup of tea, but the market loves it.
