I have just bought a JHT manual and parts list on DVD, and whilst it works on screen alright, I cannot manage to print the protected pdf pages off,despite its saying they are printable using Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Has anyone had experience of this, and a solution? I can get no reply so far from the information e mail service of Original Technical Publications who produce these

1. If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed you should be able to click on the pdf, open it and see a print button at the top of the page (alternatively try Ctrl + p). Alternatively try right mouse click on any part of the page and see if a print option pops up.

2. Next thing to try is right mouse click on the file, choose 'open with' and select IE, Chrome or Firefox. When it opens an overlay panel should appear at the bottom with a number of options including print.

3. Try downloading one of the pdf's in the Knowledge Base, opening it and see if you can print that. If yes then the files on the JHT disc are protected somehow.

4. Try reinstalling Adobe (free download) and the printer.

5. Try using this to unlock: http://www.unlock-pdf.com/

Let me know how you get on and I will, in the meantime do some research.

David : many thanks for the advice. I have tried ( I think ) all of these. All normal pdfs still print without difficulty - it is only the protected pdfs of the JHM stuff which will not print. However, I will try opening it all in Firefox and seeing how I get on . It is very annoying, since the whole object of buying the dvd was to print fresh instructions, which it did not matter soiling in the workshop . I have even gone back to Acrobat reader 8 to see whether this made a difference, but it does not - except that i get a spurious "printer out of paper " message !

There are a couple of pieces of software that should help you:

http://www.copistar.com/ - allows printing of any pdf restricted or not - demo may restrict what u can print tho

if not then http://www.abbyy.com/ do a whole suite of pdf apps to convert/print files

forgot to say, if u can find any software that does full screen print screen then that would work to, i use 'techsmith Snagit' at work for this, but its not free, i've found this below though that make work similarly:

You could try PickPic http://www.picpick.org/ which I use a lot. This is screen capture software (free) so once you have the pdf on the screen hit the PrtScn button and it takes a snapshot which you can crop, edit, save or print. I use it to grab pictures off the net and for inserting parts of documents into posts. You will find a similar tool included with Windows 7 - 'Snipping Tool'.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have now found the ( an?) answer ; use Adobe 6 and not later versions, and it works. Very strange
