#1 Rust proofing interior metal work...

Post by MartinA » Fri Dec 30, 2011 10:52 pm

I have just stripped the interior carpets and jute matting from my S2 OTS prior to retrimming the interior, and decided to strip the old paint on the sills, floors, rear bulk head and arches as it looks tatty and is flaking in places. Besides I couldn't resist seeing what the metal is like underneath (case of rust paranoia I think!). I plan to strip the paint with a wire wheel brush (looks like black paint over the original Old English White). The question now is what to paint the bare metal with? I am considering:

1. Metal Ready followed by POR15? (although this seems more suited to rusted not bare metal)

2. Metal Ready followed by Electrox (which is a zinc based paint from Bilthamber) finished with a coat of Hammerite?

Any advice appreciated.

Regards,

Martin

I found that Metal ready doesn't strip rust per-se so I would still remove as much as you can and THEN coat the metal with metal ready (which does work pretty to neutralise the remaining rust especially in any pits).

Por15 was my treatment of choice so I would paint that over the top as it will seal everything nicely. Its good stuff but buy small tins rather than one big tin as it goes off once opened.
