Without any hesitation; contact Peter James (he started Footman James, and then went solo). They are competitive, friendly, and on a written off E-type saga I had to endure last year, superb at ensuring the underwiters paid up in full.

Just renewed my motor insurance with Carole Nash. The renewal quote was. ?248 but I wanted to up the agreed valuation to 85k from 70k last year. I also
changed my address which brought the premium up to ?304 which seems reasonable to me. I took the opportunity to check all the mods were recorded to avoid any possible confusion should a claim be required. This is for 3k per year.
I did get a comparative quote from Adrian Flux and after a very poor service from them (it took a 5 days to get a quote and they failed to ring me back after repeated promises). They finally came up with a quote for ?370 by which time I was just not interested and was completely dissatisfied with their service.
I am sure there maybe cheaper quotes out there biut I am happy with the deal
The recorded mods were:-
Electronic ignition
Wide wheels, tyres
5 speed box
Stainless steel exhaust
Bigger fan
Uprated brakes all around
I am not sure why any of these mods should be a reason for not paying up if not notified but with the insurance market as it is some, lesser firms will use any excuse for not paying up

Do contact Peter James. I have known Peter for years, and he will do a special deal for club members. I always use him for my classic cars. Last year had a problem with an E type I bought, the car had an electrical problem (smoke coming from the back of the dash!). it went back to the dealers, then was about to be delivered back to me, and was involved in a crash...........I rang Peter, who intervened, and within two weeks had a full payout, but on the garages insurance. It so happened Peter insured the garage!!!!!! Then with cash I bought my current Series 2 FHC.

Well after a bit of phone calling for quotes the end result is interesting and seems to be down to which club you are in. Which ever way you go it ends up as Chauser being the insurer.
I am after an agreed valuation of ?85k which included modifications recorded as -
1. Left to right conversion
2. Uprated brakes all around.
3. Electronic ignition
4. 5 speed gearbox
5. Stainless steel exhaust
6. Uprated cooling fan.
Carole Nash - ?304
Adrian Flux - ?313
Heritage - ?338 with 15% discount as member of the E Type club with free valuation from Phil Porter.
Peter James - ?204 if member of the JEC or ?313 if member of some other club. (E type Club in my case)
It is a very good discount if a member of the JEC (34%). In my case I would have to join (?40) plus ?12 for a JEC valuation. As I am already a member of to many clubs I am reluctant to join another.
It would make very good sense to join the JEC and resign from the E Type Club as I would then save ?150 each year. However I am reluctant to do this as I like the magazine. I will stay with Carol Nash this year as I have run out of time to get valuation reports but will review it next year.
I am a little concerned when getting quotes on the phone as the proposal never seem to come back with all the information, such as reported changes and I wonder if a claim was made you would not have a record of the of the modification reported over the phone. Maybe I am worrying over nothing and have to much time these days to think about it.
So it's pay your money and takes your choice.

Yes they do record your conversation and associate the recording with your personal information. A few years ago they never bothered with modifications to classic cars but now they specifically ask you if "the car has been modified in any way from standard". So you are best to list everything but how far do you go - LED lighting, smaller steering wheel, Coolcat fan etc? I go a better rate from Peter James because I am a member of the JDC compared to the discount applied to The E-Type Club. Weird!

In all the excitement of my restoration starting to come together I had inadvertently forgotten to re-insure the car. Given that the body, engine, gearbox & other parts are in several different corners of the country I wasn't sure how this would be catered for by the various insurers. Results as follows based on laid up cover for sum of parts currently estimated at ?40k:
Footman James - ?376
Peter James - ?350
Adrian Flux - kept me hanging on for 5 mins only to tell me they wouldn't quote as car not complete
RH - ?116
It's a no brainer who I'm going with & furthermore RH seemed to completely understand the restoration process I was going through & just asked me to inflate the value as required once the car starts to come together.

Interestingly that's roughly what the 'on road' premium was for me with Peter James & Footman James. But laid up cover is bizarrely more expensive than fully comp as it's rated purely on value.

Hi Everyone.
I'd followed this thread with interest a few months ago.
I've just managed to get a combined insurance quote for the "family fleet" as the insurer calls it for ?409. This was from Heritage Insurance and includes the following:-
1962 SI E-Type OTS-Agreed Value ?70k
1968 TR250-resto project-Current market value-Fire & Theft only
1971 GT6Mk3-Agreed Value ?9k
There is a 1,500 annual mileage limit on each car and no breakdown cover included since I have this through my Bank's current account.
As David stated earlier I included a very long and detailed list of modifications carried out to both roadworthy cars.
I always dealt with the same person and she stated that she would also be my contact in case the worst happens.
All in all I was very happy with the company throughout the process.
I'd insured the E-Type with then before now.
Footman James who I'd used for many years for the GT6 decided to hike the premium up from ?216 to ?280. This was due to a change in the way they assess cars, apparently. They didn't even bother phoning back when I asked them to give me a group insurance quote. They seem to have gone very corporate in their approach-their loss.
Peter James although very helpful, could only manage a quote of ?587.
Anyway I thought this might be of use to anyone about to renew their insurance.
Cheers
Alan

I have just insured my S3 OTS LHD on a Laid up basis for ?79 a year and all resto parts locked in my garage also covered.
Also when I am taking it for an MOT to get it UK registered it will switch to comprehensive cover to and from the garage as long as the car is booked in for the MOT.
The policy is with RH.

Been quoted ?116 with Classic Line for the missis and I for 1500 miles per year and a value of ?30k including breakdown cover. Car not garaged and they didn't ask for an alarm. Thought that was pretty good.
