Can anyone advise the whereabouts of engine number R6443-9 originally fitted to 1962 Series 1 FHC 801 DEW or advise how one might go about finding it? Regards, Peter

You would be very lucky to find it now . If it has gone from the car, it is probably because it was beyond economic repair and will have been scrapped . You could try the number on xkedata.com but it is very unlikely to produce a result

Nothing an unscrupulous dealer wouldn't resolve with a grinder and set of stamps. Voila, a matching numbers car and ten grand on their profit margin!

Yeah but the date cast into the block gives it away!

I've been wondering about that, Angus. Is the date cast into the block on the inlet side just beneath the head the date on which the block was cast?

Yes, it is just adjacent to nos 1 & 2 cylinders on the inlet side just below the cylinder head join. And in fact early E 4.2 blocks are not that easy to fake, because the big supply of 4.2 blocks began with the XJ6 which have the 5 core plugs !
