I'm going to look at a 2+2 with a Webasto sunroof - what 's the general feeling on them or is it really down to personal preference? I would have thought that it would be great to have it open on a sunny day, especially to get rid of the heat in the car. However two things spring to mind - (1) do they affect the value of the car and (2) how noisy are they, assuming it is in good condition and fitted properly? Thanks. Malc

I think you will I'd that most people with FHC cars will say no way . Personally with my 2 plus 2 I wouldn't be without it. In fact when looking this was one of my must have's.

I don't notice any noise because its always open. Mine has a slight leak at the front edge which I haven't bothered to fix but I know specialists exist who can service these.

Absolutely essential in my view!

I would expect a car fitted with a Webasto to have a lower value than a complete FHC but on the 2+2 I don't think it will have much effect.

Thanks David & Tim. I'd already done a search of the forum site and found the threads (now I know how to do a 'search'!), and am going to speak to Peter Harvey who apparently is 'Mr Webasto' and get his advice as, apparently, he used to have an E-Type so can hopefully tell me whether getting a good fit on the roof can ease the noise. As I want the car for touring as well, I don't want to be assailed by road noise for hours at anything over 50mph. Any more comments though, always welcome! Malc

If you want to use the ar for touring then the Webasto is a very good idea because these cars get hot! Consider fitting Koolmat to the interior to reduce conducted heat and noise. A properly fitting Webasto should not be overly intrusive compared to an OTS with the hood up.

David - Koolmat's on my list of things to do - the trouble is you start reading through the forum, and before you know it, there's a list a mile long of things that would be good to do such as electronic ignition, koolmat, high torque starter motor etc etc. I've even been through the list of upgrades you posted in May 2012 and highlighted interesting improvements - and I haven't even got a car yet! Looks like buying the car's going to be the cheap bit! Malc

Best way is buy your car and use it for a while and you will then begin to understand what changes, if any, you want to make to allow you to get more enjoyment and purpose. Don't rush in and change things because even a totally standard E-Type is more than capable of outpacing modern traffic, it just was never designed to mix with it; reducing stress on man and machine are the goals.

Step One - get car! Everything else is secondary, but browsing the forum is a good way to learn more so that when and if I decide to do any 'improvements', I will know what the car should be like and could be like. Malc

I have driven all manner of e-type and other classics over the years both with and without, to be honest never had a problem with them, it's period after all. The car I'm restoring is solid topped but that's just my preference, and has a lot of discreet mods gear box, brakes, megajolt. cable throttle, starter, adjustable platform suspension, multi V alternator belt etc as I've said here before if the car is for you and not a business proposition do what you like, buy what you like, it's your money and a lot of it, so buy a car that makes you happy and tell anybody who criticises to get lost.

I always though if you put a smiley face after a comment people understood it was tongue in check, what I was trying to get across is not to worry about those people who will inevitable look at your car and tell you that the alignment of a certain screw head is wrong, or the colour of a part inside the engine is is the wrong shade of grey. Each to his or her own you only have yourself to please. I think an E-type would sound great with a V8 under the hood.

Webasto is wonderful whilst Peter Harvey is definitely Mr Webasto! Seriously, I do love my sunroof, but it does throw up some concerns like what happens if I want to re-cover it and how do I paint the roof if, god forbid, I ever need too. I am still glad I have it though - definitely an "upgrade" as far as I am concerned!

Having come from a TR3 which I ran with areo screens all the time I could not live without my Webasto. All the pleasures of an open car without the all the problems of the hood. As to values I would say they are like Marmite - you either love them or hate them!

I restored my father?s old S-type in the mid 80s. I had the original one replaced then and could live without it. It is part of the car and a very nice period upgrade. With the wind deflector I can drive the car at 75 MPH without any noise or problem. Without it, it gets very noisy above 50 or so. Completely watertight when in good condition.
