Wiper Rack Replacement

Can anyone assist with this problem

On my S3 coupe, the knurled nuts to which each wiper arm is fixed are badly worn, to the point where one of them no longer actually drives the wipers across the screen. It just spins in the base of the wiper arm. Is there a way of replacing these knurled nuts in situ, rather than having to strip out the dash and everything behind it and replace the complete wiper rack mechanism??

Unless the splined end that you're referring to is no longer attached to the drive spindle (I think there's three small peened over protrusions that secure the splined part to the spindle), then you'll almost certainly need to look at replacing the rack and the removal of the dash top.

I agree with Chris that the wiper rack will have to come out. However if you go to a scrapyard and get hold of a Jaguar rack you can remove the splined shafts and fit them to yours.
I bought parts of a rack from Stoneleigh a few years ago to repair mine. You need to peen the ends over so the rack has to be placed on a hard firm surface to allow you to peen the ens over.
