Where E-types are concentrated in GB

Hi there,

Unfortunately I'm not an E-type owner, though maybe one day! I recently did some analysis on where classic cars are concentrated in Britain (including E-types), and thought this might be of interest - particularly to compare with the map on here of where members are. I got data on how many of various models are registered in each county from the Department for Transport, and combined this with census data to see which counties have more or fewer cars per person than average. I've created some 'heatmaps', including one showing where more expensive classics are concentrated. It groups E-types with Aston DB5s, DB6s, and V8s, but E-types are far more numerous than Astons, so it's not far off just being a map of where E-types are concentrated. The maps, and a tool that lets you see how many E-types are registered in each county are on my website - www.suitableclassics.co.uk Hopefully this might be of some interest to you guys. Do let me know if it's interesting. If people do find it interesting I could do a map just of E-types.

Hi Mike

Is the information you accessed easy to find? When I looked at the Isle of Wight I see you have shown DB5, DB6 & V8s, but if I wanted to see if there are any other DBS owners, could I do that? But it's interesting to see classic ownership is very high here (178% of what you'd think)

Some here - can't find any link on that website of anything to do with E-Type's! On the other hand all the known data about E-Type production numbers can be found on www.XKEdata.com. I created a worldwide map of E-Type's here: http://www.zeemaps.com/World_Map_of_E-Type_s on which you can add your car.

Hi Andrew,

The data I've used was pulled from the DfT's database specifically for this. There are freely available data tables showing how many of each model are on the roads for the whole country, but not by area.

I tried to include all cars that were identifiable as classics from the database. With cars like the DBS, and the Fiat 500 it's not really possible to do this as the classic ones are mixed in with the new models. Strangely, all Ferraris are simply listed as 'ferrari' with no specific model info, which is why none are included in the analysis I've done.

Where numbers of cars in a particular area are small, the data I have only shows whether there are none, or 'fewer than 5'. This is to avoid it disclosing too much info.

Interesting. I for one have long wished the manufactures would not re-use model names of the past, and also to progress the names like Triumph did with the TR series but unlike Toyota did with the MR2. Whenever I 'Bing' or look on e-bay for DBS 99% of what I find relates to the modern one, which is really frustrating. It's so much easier with the MGB and e-type.

Same here - Lotus did it with the Elan and then had to call it the Elan M100 to differentiate it from its forebear.

I've just come across this thread and checked out your website.
I filtered on my local area in Fife, Scotland and see we are very under represented when the number of classics is compared to the population.
One thing I would query is the accuracy of the figures for each car type. For instance my neighbour 4 doors down has a 1968 Triumph Herald Convertible and I have a 1971 Triumph GT6. Neither type is listed, but I'm sure there are a few of each in Fife because there is a Triumph & MG garage less than 5 miles from my house!
Nonetheless it make interesting reading-good work.
