#1 Recommendation required for Herts/Essex Mechanic?
Posted: Wed Jul 24, 2013 8:51 pm
by Kent Thirley
I am looking for recommendations from forum members for a good mechanic to look at my S1 3.8 FHC.
My car has developed a slight issue with holding back under power/acceleration & occasionally a 'cough' under normal running.
This issue developed after I replaced a carb float that had become flooded with fuel.
I am based close to Bishops Stortford.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi SESH,
I saw that you are based in Southend and had a look at your website.
I have recently retired after many years as an air traffic controller at Southend so your name is familiar to me from your time with BAF and BWA.
I have recently bought a S2 FHC and although I have no serious problems at the moment I'm sure I will need professional help (some would say I already do !) at some time in the future.
Have you used or do you know of any classic Jaguar or general classic car specialists in our area ? All the ones recommended on this forum seem to be quite a long way away.

Avoid general classic car specialist and go for someone who specialises in E-Type's. In your area you have access to one of the best in the UK - Angus Moss. Further away there is E Type UK and CMC.

Hi Brian,
Small world !!
I have found Angus Moss to be very helpful and knowledgable in all aspects of E Type maintenance and trouble shooting. He is based in Herts. Or there is E Type UK in Kent.
I have a contact of a mechanic in Benfleet (Manor Trading Estate) who understands E Types that I will look up. He also runs a photographic business called Mid West images. His name is Gordon.
I use a local chap, but getting access to him is very difficult as he is always very busy with a classic car business.
I will let you know.
Hope you enjoy E Type ownership.
Regards
Mike

Thank you both, I know Letchworth is not a million miles away but it could be if the car had a serious problem, so I just wondered if there was anyone closer.
Sounds like Angus is the man then if the need arises - hope it won't for a long time !

Been there, bought some used Webers off him. Decent place for Webers / fuel system setup work generally.

Peter,
Been searching for info on SU's need to rip my Strombergs off, should never have refurbed them - or more to the point a certain person who will remain nameless only refurbed 3 of them! I have someone who can fit no problem but wondering best place to either purchase a totally refurbed set or should I just go brand new??
Thanks,
Malcolm

For a V12 I wouldn't bother, to be honest. One 1.75" Strangleberg per 1250cc triple is not such an issue as one per 2100cc triple on the sixes. I'd just get the remaining carb refurbed and stay standard. I doubt David Lonsdale has much expertise in non-standard setups like four SUs per engine. Could be wrong, but the carbs are not a limitation like they are on a Federal six. European cars got the same carbs after all. Plus Group 44 got serious power from a four carb engine under the rules at the time.
