I have the below metallifacture jack which is not correct for my 62 OTS because a) it has the removable handle and b) the swivel is the wrong type. Please can anyone identify which model this is for or if indeed it is actually for an E-Type at all ?

It looks just like the jack (with removable handle) that came with my '67 OTS when I bought it and as far as I know, it was original with the car.

Correct jack for a 1962 car is a Shelley LJ225 droop snout three stage fitted up until:
Right Hand Drive OTS: to #850548.
Left Hand Drive OTS: to #877518.
Right hand Drive FHC: to #860660.
Left Hand Drive FHC: to #886246.



After that it was the Metallifacture one with integrated handle:


By the time of the S1.5 and S2 cars the Metallifacture jack had changed to one with a removable ratchet handle with the same hinged box on the end as above which fitted into the square receiver on the sill.

All the LWB jacks I've seen are the same as the XJ jacks which use the same nipple to attach the jack pad to. Those cars have one circular jacking point nipple at each corner and the jacks have a circular hole not a u-shaped cutout like that example. It would work but would not be as secure. As David said, all SWB cantilever jacks had a square pad to fit over the single square location point half way along each sill. It's easy enough to convert the circular nipple cheap XJ jack to an expensive SWB jack by switching or modifying the pad on the end of the arm.

Hi gents,

I have seen this interesting post in the forum about e-type jacks. I have a 1963 manufactured in October, therefore the correct jack would be a metallifacture with fixed handle.... almost impossible to find out there. I would be satisfied with a S2 metallifacture. I would like to make sure the dimensions for the metallifacture jack I buy match the one for e-type S2. Could someone please clarify the dimensions the S2 jack when opened and when retracted? What would be the size of the square ratchet drive hole?

The later Metalifacture jack is the same as the early one but has a removable handle:


The last early jack on eBay went for ?515 and the later ones fetch about ?150+. There is one on eBay at the moment: http://tinyurl.com/lcus8pe You can use any of these Metalifacture scissor jacks designed for other period vehicles and swap the head over. e.g. http://tinyurl.com/pk3p9db which is bidding to ?65 and generally sell for ?90.

Thanks for your reply David and I agree with your comments. However, I am not completely sure they are all geometrically the same. I have enquired different sellers and some of them reported distinct measurements and jack heights. The one I am about to buy has an overall length of 18.5" x 9" wide. With the arm fully extended, the top of the jack is 14.5" high. The ratchet is 8/9mm, squared profile. Does this measurements matches the original e-type scissor-jack?

Yes, those dimensions are correct. The ones designed for other vehicles sometimes have a different width foot so as to fit, I presume, in available boot space. Here is a modified one which is 8" wide:

Hi Gents,

I finally managed to buy my metallifacture jack, it has been hard to get something in a reasonable price, paid ?196 for a lotus elan version. Picture below.


I will have to modify the lifting cup and I was wondering if someone could help me with measurements. My plan is to buy a square tube to match the original cup dimensions. Close up pictures will also help! I am looking for the details from the drawing below:

Yes, the shoe is ?25 and the rivet is ?5: Richard Smith - 01270 780954 rmj@rmjsmith.fsnet.co.uk The Lotus Elan jack is even rarer than the the E-Type jack! If you are going to DIY the bracket I suggest you simply cut off the Elan mounting spigot and weld on a new cup.

The cup is 1.5" x 1.5" internally, 7/64" thick and 11/32" deep. So a square of 12 SWG steel folded at the edges and tack welded would do it.
