Hi,

Does anyone have first hand experience of Hutson Motor Company, specifically with regard to turn around time. I've seen the quality of some of thier painted bodyshell which looks good.

Chris, no need for PMs from me on this one. I have used them for years. They have built and painted 2 tubs for me which have been to a high quality. Yes, there are problems but they have always been resolved to my satisfaction. Regarding turn around. They always overcommitted in my experience but I think Andy has learnt not to now!

I have dealt with them for 18 years . The people are lovely to deal with , with Andy Rayner, the manager , bending over backwards to sort out any problems . On my FHC total rebuild, the job was stunning ( I have been asked by Barratts to use it for their next catalogue photoshoot ) and I received splendid service throughout. The only drawback to their being one of the best , if not the best ) E restorers is that time always gets elongated . I found that the best way to keep things moving was to visit about monthly, always announcing the date of my visit about 2 weeks in advance - that way you got about 2 weeks' progress in any month ! I do know from recent conversations that Andy has work stretching certainly into next year. I should also add that despite a number of unforeseen complications, my job , excluding extras which I ordered as we went along, came in within about 4% of the original quotation, which is just another reason for recommending them

Hutson have worked on my car for the past three years. The restoration of my '65 FHC body is nearing completion and they have worked miracles. They were the only company I approached that had anything positive to say about the rusty old shell and have transformed it. They were also the most reasonably priced as well.

The quality of the work is excellent but progress can be patchy and slow. Having said that, I agree that Andy Rayner is a pleasure to deal with and is always available. I am not sure I agree about him not over commiting any more - even in these tough economic times there seem to be plenty of people with the cash to pay for restoration work and he can't say no! Lets face it, who would?

I have loads of photos of the work as it has progressed so if you would like me to send some to you send me you e-mail address.

On the whole you will get a great job but don't expect it in a hurry.

Both companies are highly regarded for their work on E-Type's. Visit both and see which takes your fancy, can meet your dealine and match your budget.

Several positive comments re Hutsons in this thread. I'm looking for panels to rebuild the bonnet on my s 1.5 FHC. Is there experience out there regarding the fit and quality of their panels? I don't expect to get away without some fitting and fettling...

PM with responses if that's more appropriate.

Steve : no bonnet fits without fettling. The bonnets are, and always were, made too long and too deep so that they could be made to accommodate the slight dimensional differences which existed between individual cars . When I had my rebuild done by Hutsons, I used an Abbey panels bonnet ( i.e. the original manufacturers ) , but it was still necessary to cut and shut it , and Gordon at Hutsons made a wonderful job of it so that you cannot see where bits have been cut off and rewelded . Incidentally , Hutsons press a good number of the panels now themselves and are the only source as far as I am aware of bonnet centre sections . The one thing they don't seem to do are doors which always come from Robey, but I believe a lot of the Robey panels may now be pressed at Hutsons

Have had several conversations with Andy at previous Stoneleigh events, and was impressed with his knowledge and willingness to share it.

I have some e-type experienced help on hand for the next stage... Let's see how it goes!
