#1 Tailgating

Post by PeterE » Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:58 pm

So, the sun's out, my SIII is back on the road after its winter break and I'm pottering around the roads of Surrey, Kent and Sussex with a grin on my face listening to Sir William Lyons' 12th Symphony, the wind ruffling the top of my head where I once had hair... So what could possibly spoil this motoring idyll (potholes aside)?

Well the tailgaiters are out pursuing me relentlessly again about 2 metres from my tailpipes, usually of German manufacture and able to see around corners and over hills to enable overtaking whenever such an opportunity presents itself.

Like most of us I enjoy giving the throttle a good prod now and again when road conditions and speed limits permit but most of the time I just enjoy the E Type driving experience on country lanes, Captain Slow I'm not though  .

Are all E Types a target for this kind of moronic behaviour or classic cars in general, or is it just me?

Unfortunately, no E Type any more

I think you will find people are just curious and want to get a close look/ From their elevated position they can see down into the cabin and dash and many have not got that close to an E-Type. You get the odd clown who wants to goad you into a race but I have to say it is rare.

I get the same issues with the S3, but not with the S1 Coupe. Maybe it's the S3 fantail exhaust, or the V12 badge on the boot, or the Greenpeace sticker?

And I thought this was a "California problem." In addition to the usual tailgaters, I had to deal with the p*ssed-off guy in the 4X4 pickup (that probably cost more than I had invested in my E-Type) riding on my rear bumper until he found a place he could pass--legally or otherwise. Other offenders were those driving old bangers, often without insurance or driver's license. It's a dangerous world out there for any classic.

Planning on getting E-Type No. 3 as soon as possible....
