I have the two main UK E-type brochures for Series 1 4.2 cars.
One is the 'red' one which talks about the 'New' 4.2 and came out around 1965.
I also have the white and blue one from October 1967 which has a picture of an OSB FHC inside.
I noticed that my 'red' brochure has a different gearbox picture than the other brochure. It is also different than other copies of all the same 'red' brochures I can see online.
Here is the normal gearbox picture from brochures:

Here is the gearbox picture from my 'red' brochure:

This is the brochure page:

So the question is what is the difference between the gearboxes shown?
Is mine a mistake and it shows an overdrive unit on the back of the gearbox?

To me it seems as if the "red" brochure pic is indeed an XJ6 version- an OD is fitted, and the cover looks like XJ6....

The longer gearbox is the overdrive option they never fitted.
In 1961 they were already mocking up transmission tunnel panels to allow that box and the auto box to be used interchangeably in the E-type, same as the MkX (code name 'Zenith') in which that box was first used. Of course we know now that they never fitted the overdrive although they did make that and the LWB 4-speed and the auto interchangeable.
If you want to see a REALLY bad mistake in Jag literature look at the dotted line showing the timing chain route on a cutaway V12 drawing in the engine launch brochure. It goes from the big end to the camshafts (which have no sprockets IIRC).

Message for Heuer: Are there copies of the brochures already in the Knowledge Base somewhere or in another section?abowie wrote:Can you scan them up and put them as PDFs in the Knowledge Base ?
So it looks like my brochure was probably one from the first print run and the photo was changed in subsequent runs.

The only brochures we have copies of are the 3.8 colour and black & white Press technical specification. I put them in 'Collectors Corner': viewtopic.php?t=917 Fell free to add scans there if you want. I did not bother with later brochures because thewre are a lot of them and they pretty well covered on J-L: http://www.jag-lovers.org/brochures/section_e-type.html
