Nice article, and as I sit here STILL waiting for my car to come back from the trimmers, I have that first drive to look forward to.

I did have a 3.8 OTS a few years ago but it seemed to want to rear steer and the most recent 4.2 I drove was perfect in that respect, so I am waiting with baited breadth and much expectation for that first experience after my cars 3 year rebuild. I thought Setright captured it superbly well. So much of owning a proper car like an E Type is about how it makes you feel when you drive it and not just about how it works as a machine, but the early E clearly scored highly in both areas.

LJK and Mark Williams were the two very different but equally impressive stars of CAR sister magazine, BIKE, before it disappeared up its own expletive-riddled fundament. Dave Minton was another inspiring motorcycle writer. I probably owe them my present job if you go back far enough into cause and effect.

The LJKS piece is nice to read again as Dave Kerr was kind enough to loan me his 3.8 to zoom around the Worcestershire hills in August when I was over. Thanks again Dave.

Along with Steady Barker , Setright was the greatest of all motoring writers, both erudite and poetic at the same time. In an era when the majority of cars now have all the character of white goods, he brings back to our minds the romantic aspect of the motor car

Another good writer was Ray Knight in Motorcycle Sport.

Setright and Barker, you chaps must be very old I remember those old boys but grew up with Russell Bulgin as my motoring reference point. Taken from us far too early

Yes, but then we start trotting out names like Vic Willoughby and DSJ, plus of course Bruce 'Mr BMF' Preston and the Vincent-riding man who became a lady, whose name escapes me. She ended up as Jacqueline something. Met her once or twice.

Both. Bickerstaffe the surname was as I recall. Nice chap/esse. Very slender in black road leathers. She did the deed decades before it became somewhat trendy, so kudos for having the balls to go through with it. Or not.
