#1 15,000 Miles 1 owner from new.

Post by harryetype » Fri Apr 24, 2015 2:20 am

Its not everyday you get a phone call asking if you want to buy a 1 owner 15,000 mile late S1 E-type. So here it is a 1967 late S1 not a 1 1/2 complete with hand books and tools.

Interior is like new and the leather is even supple.

Boot floor is flawless.

Nice set of books

Lovely doors.

Engine compartment totally original and untouched

All I need to do now is get it back to my workshop and decide the best plan of action.

Oh dear oh dear. Fit only for the crusher - look at those tyre marks on the boot floor. Waste of time trying to resurrect that. You've been had :-(

Luckily for you, because I'm all heart, I will help you from incurring huge losses as you uncover more such disasters, by taking it off your hands gratis. I hate to see even clunkers like that be crushed.

Don't bother with a valet or service, I'm going to grow primroses in it on the front lawn. Leave the books in it as compost starter, there's a good chap :-)

Besides saying, you lucky fellow, surely getting it up and running may take a bit more than a wash, polish and fill up the fuel tank?
Possible seized parts due not being used? Even down to petty items like the bleed nipples not opening then having to be drilled out with all the consequent extra work. Unless the engine was properly inhibited what corrosion could be lurking there? Replacing seals in the rear brakes and replacing rusty discs means an IRS off.

I certainly hope there won't be many gremlins. And definitely don't take the first offer from Peter to take it off your hands, as nice as he's trying to be to you

Amazing !!

Just keep it original as some would wish and believe it should always remain. Seized bleed nipples ? - phahh - enjoy the original brake fluid. Perished seals ? Keep them original and enjoy the feel of the original driving experience !!!

Well done on such a fantastic low mileage unmolested E type.

So if it's a late S1 but not an S1.5 and yet it's got open headlights, where does it fit in the grand scheme of things? Does that make it one of the elusive S1.25s? I realise anything other than S1 is an unofficial designation anyway, but it's all very confusing!

Courtesy of a comment posted on XKE Data back in 2005 I may have been able to answer my own question:

Open headlights occurred in Jan of '67. All cars were technically Series 1 until '68 when toggle switches and the stromberg carbs arrived. Those cars are referred to as S1.5 cars because they had S2 drive trains and interiors, yet retained S1 bodies. The books are incorrect as to when open headlights occurred. There are Jaguar Service Bulletins that verify it happened in Jan of '67 unrelated to the S1.5 modifications. In North America (other countries a few numbers later) open headlights occurred on OTS 1E14532 and FHC 1E34113. If anyone wants to see a copy of the bulletin info feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your kind offer Pete. As you are doing me such a favor, I will pick up the tab for delivery to your place.

The car is about 250 numbers before the 1 1/2. Ive read all about 1.25's but I think Jaguar would call it a late S1 with open headlights. Even the 1 1/2's read as S1's on the Jaguar Heritage Certificate.

I don't know about the seals on the car but the leather is nice and supple.

Great find, the big question for me - does the interior smell as it did when new - we all have our fetish you know!

Yes the trim still smells the way it did when it was new. It has Dunlop SP Sports all round, they might need changing though.

That's really bad dress sense " primrose + primrose" , violets or red roses would be a far better colour combo 👍🏼
